ABERDEEN — A stay at home mom and a retired school teacher have partnered to write and illustrate children's books.
Author Julie Beck is a stay at home mom with six children. She has read countless children's books to her kids, and about 10 years ago she said she began writing her own stories. But it wasn't until a few years ago that she found someone to illustrate her stories, making her dream of writing children's books a reality.
February 10th
BLACKFOOT — Four students from Blackfoot High School (BHS) qualified to participate in the National Association of Music Education (MENC) All-Northwest Conference Feb. 16-20 in Bellevue, Wash.
About 1,000 outstanding high school musicians from the six Northwest states (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming) will participate in the All-Northwest Band, Orchestra, Treble Choir, Mixed Choir, Jazz Band and/or Jazz Choir.
To be selected, each student was recorded online performing college level pieces. Screeners selected the students who will participate.

THOMAS — At the Snake River school board meeting Wednesday, Craig Rowland, Bingham County Emergency Management Services, asked approval from the trustees to continue looking into obtaining federal grant money to purchase a backup generator for Snake River High School.
"If in case of an emergency, the county would need a shelter to house a lot of people in one location, the Snake River High School would be ideal," Rowland said, "except it doesn't have a backup generator.
February 8th
BLACKFOOT — Attorneys for two former Blackfoot High School athletes facing misdemeanor charges have filed motions for change of venue, but will have to wait until next week to have their motions heard before the court. Both cases are scheduled to be tried in Bingham County in March.
BLACKFOOT – Lois Bowyer celebrated her 97th birthday Tuesday. She lives at the Gables in Blackfoot along with 15 other residents.
“I’m the oldest one here,” she confided.
Bowyer’s secret for a long life is “always exercise and keep going.” She did add that salsa is good on everything.
“I developed my delight in (mild) salsa because there were four Spanish cafes where we lived in Southern California,” she said. “I eat salsa with every meal, and then walk three to seven times around the Gables after each meal.”
Bowyer sets a sprightly pace when walking.
February 7th
In Blackfoot, the next Red Cross blood drive is from noon to 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 1110 Parkway Drive, Blackfoot.
Call organizer Barb Norwood for an appointment. Her phone number is 785-2666.
Because of the bad weather across the U.S., many blood drives have been cancelled.
If the blood drive exceeds its goal, people in other regions of the country can be helped, said Norwood.
Donors are asked to make appointments by calling Norwood at 785-2666.
Bbring identification. Before donating blood, Norwood recommends drinking lots of water and eating lunch.
BLACKFOOT — Sam Wyrouck flew 35 missions over Germany as a lower ball turret gunner in a B-17 during World War II.
Wyrouck, age 86, said he went into the U.S. Army Air Force after graduating from high school in 1943.
"The reason he made it back," said his wife, Eliose, "was because I prayed for him twice each day."
Wyrouck wrote about an unusual blood drive.
"My crew number 5383 was part of the 351st Bomb Group. During WWII, the Eighth Air Force was the thrust of the air war against Hitler's Germany. It was made up of about 36 bomber groups plus fighter groups.
BLACKFOOT — Butch Hulse’s Bingham County roots run deep.
But, after graduating from Blackfoot High School during the Vietnam War he wanted out of town so badly that he joined the U.S. Army.
After spending many years away, Hulse returned in 1997. Since then he has been involved in the community in a variety of ways.

THOMAS — The kick-off for the Math-a-Thon at the Snake River Middle School and Rockford Elementary School was Thursday. This event is sponsored by the PTA.
Snake River varsity basketball players joined the fun to spur on enthusiasm for this fund raiser.
This is the fifth year the Math-a-Thon has been in the middle school and the first year for fourth graders at Rockford Elementary.
Students have 20 days to get pledges and/or donations for the Math-a-Thon.
On Wednesday, Feb. 16, fourth, fifth and sixth graders in the two schools will take a 100-problem math test.
BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot School District is asking voters to renew a $1.975 million supplemental levy at the March 8 election.
The amount of the levy, which is used to supplement funding for maintenance, technology, teacher salaries and other items, has not changed since 2007, and this year district patrons should actually see a slight decrease in their school tax burden even if the levy is passed.
