Two arrested in string of Wal-Mart thefts

REXBURG — Two men who police say were part of a much larger crime ring based in Florida were arrested Friday after making fraudulent purchases at Walmart stores in Blackfoot, Chubbuck, Rexburg, Mountain Home and Boise.
Rexburg Police Capt. Randy Lewis said Onis Alvarez-Rodriguez, 27, and Alejandro Perez-Castellanos, 19, were arrested Friday afternoon after they attempted to purchase an iPad 2 with a fraudulent credit card at the Rexburg Walmart.

Fire destroys 600 tons of hay

PINGREE — An early morning fire Sunday destroyed approximately 600 tons of hay and straw near 1025 South 1500 West.
The Blackfoot Fire Department responded to the call at 2:30 a.m. Sunday. They were assisted by the Springfield and Aberdeen Fire Departments. Eleven firefighters and two engines with three water tenders responded. The last unit cleared the scene at 12:50 p.m. Sunday.
The hay belonged to Val Carter of Pingree and the loss is estimated to be near $115,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation and is currently being called suspicious.

Potato Conference begins today

POCATELLO — The Ag Expo opened Tuesday with over 125 exhibitors at Holt Arena on the Idaho State University campus in Pocatello. The Ag Expo continues from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to noon on Thursday.
The Potato Conference is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Pond Building on the ISU campus. Park at Holt Arena and ride the free shuttle bus.
The public is welcome. Admission is free.
At least 100 seed potato producers met Tuesday afternoon in Clarion Inn in Pocatello to study seed potato production.
