How the Republican Caucus will work

March 5, 2012

BLACKFOOT — The Idaho State Republican Caucus is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Doors at the caucus sites will open at 5 p.m. to allow people to register.
People wishing to participate in the caucus must be in line by 7 p.m. After that time, no more people can come in to participate in the caucus.
Bingham County is offering Republicans four caucus sites. These sites are:
· In Blackfoot at the Blackfoot High School old gymnasium
· In Thomas at Snake River High School cafeteria
· In Shelley in the Shelley High School gymnasium

Shooting under investigation

BLACKFOOT — Detectives from the Bingham County Sheriff's Office are continuing their investigation into a shooting incident in the Rose area last Wednesday.
Sheriff Dave Johnson said, "we don't know what really happened. It involved a shotgun at the parents' home."
Nineteen-year-old Dakota Oleson received shotgun pellets to his abdomen and left arm after a shotgun went off in a bedroom at the home of Justin and Christie Oleson.
The alleged shooter is a younger brother.

Moore files for state House

R. David Moore, Blackfoot's chief of police, has filed as a candidate for District Seat A in the Idaho House of Representatives.
"There seems to be a loss of contact with the constituents, Moore said. "I see a lot of personal agendas in the Idaho legislature right now. I want to represent the constituents of Bingham County."

Rowland to seek sheriff's post

Craig Rowland, the Bingham County Director of Emergency Management, Parks and Recreation and Abatement District, is running for sheriff.
"I have spent the biggist part of the past eight years on the outside, looking in at the sheriff's office," Rowland said. "I see changes that would benefit not just the sheriff's office but also the county and its cities.
"My campaign is 'Communications and Cooperation,'" Rowland said. "I see the need for communications and cooperation with agencies in the county and with more people who live in the county.

Sorensen making national headlines

BLACKFOOT — Amy Sorensen wanted to find a creative way to catch people's attention and promote presidential candidate Mitt Romney. That is why she brought her "Mitt is bringing sexy back" sign to the Romney rally on Thursday. Little did Sorensen know that her sign would receive national attention. Now, Sorensen's picture has been displayed in the Washington Post, the LA Times, Reuters and numerous blogs.

DUMPSTER FIRE: Feb. 24, 5:36 p.m.: A woman said she is driving on Camas Street and there is a metal dumpster on fire.

MISSING WALLET: Feb. 24, 6:18 p.m.: A caller reported a missing wallet. They said it is zebra-striped and there is $400 inside.

PATIENT LEAVING: Feb. 25, 7:22 a.m.: A caller at Bingham Memorial Hospital said a man is attempting to leave. They said he is getting dressed and determined to leave when he is dressed.

Romney rallies in Idaho Falls

IDAHO FALLS - On Thursday afternoon, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney attended a rally at Skyline High School. A flood of Southeast Idaho residents crowded into both of Skyline's gymnasiums to see the presidential hopeful. Despite the close quarters, spirits were high. Amy Sorensen, a member of the Bingham County GOP and an attendee of the rally, was excited that a candidate visited this area. "A lot of the time we are ignored, so it is nice to have a candidate who cares about what we think," said Sorensen.

Cox file unsealed

BLACKFOOT — In the Christopher Cox case, Magistrate Judge Charles Roos unsealed most of the documents regarding this case.
The 38-year-old Cox is the former Snake River Junior High School principal who is accused of three counts of sexual abuse of a child under age 16. It is alleged the victim was 14-years-old at the time of the incidents. She has since left the area.
Judge Roos said he was going to vacate the order [to seal the case] because it "was not properly done."

Recall petition filed against Blackfoot school board member Lipovac

A group of citizens has submitted a recall petition against Blackfoot school board member Peter Lipovac to the Bingham County Clerk's office .
The Idaho Code refers to this recall petition as a "prospective petition."
The determination by the clerk triggers a 75-day deadline for whomever is behind the recall effort to submit the required number of signatures to the clerk's office, said Bingham County Prosecuting Attorney Scott Andrew. (This is called "perfecting" the petition.)

I.F. bomb squad recovers possible explosive device

March 1, 2012

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 4:18 p.m., the Blackfoot Police Department responded to an apartment complex on South Broadway in Blackfoot reference a possible explosive device.
When officers arrived on scene, they found the device in a vacant apartment. Officers sent a picture and description to the Idaho Falls bomb squad who later came to the scene.
The neighboring apartments were evacuated, said Blackfoot Police Captain Kurt Asmus.
The device was made safe and is being examined by the bomb squad. No one was injured.
The officers were on the scene for four hours, Asmus said.
