Blackfoot Police

BATTERY: Jan. 15, 4:32 p.m.: A caller said a female was just punched in the face by a male in the parking lot at Chevron.

SCARY SQUIRREL: Jan. 15, 11:23 p.m.: A woman said she believes there is a squirrel under her couch and she is afraid of it.

ATTEMPTED RAPE: Jan. 16, 1:48 p.m.: A woman said a man tried to have sex with her against her will this morning. She said the man began getting "fresh" with her and began taking her shirt off and broke her bra. She said she hit the man and ran out of the residence.

Buster the Bus comes to town

BLACKFOOT — Bus drivers from throughout the region braved the wicked roads Monday morning to keep a date with "Buster the Bus."
"Busters" is a miniature, remote-controlled 3-foot tall, animated replica of a full-sized yellow school bus, equipped with a swing-out stop sign, a crossing gate and flashing red lights, just like a real school bus.

Woman sentenced for grand theft

Jolene Flores, age 58, was sentenced to the Idaho Department of Correction on Monday for one count of grand theft and one count of forgery.
On Nov. 1, 2011, Flores was accused of forging checks, taking money from her aunt's checking account. Her aunt is 87-year-old Desi Underwood. Flores was charged with one count of grand theft, one count of burglary and one count of forgery.
Flores pleaded guilty to the charges of grand theft and forgery on Nov, 26, 2012. The charge of burglary was dismissed on motion of the prosecutor.

Storm closes many county schools

Blackfoot School District 55 was one of the few districts in the county to keep schools open Monday morning after a cold front moved in Sunday night, bringing windy conditions and dumping several inches of snow throughout the region.
In Bingham County - Shelley, Firth, and Snake River school districts and Blackfoot Charter Community Learning Center all closed school because of hazardous road conditions and blowing and drifting snow.

Purple spuds the new rage for color and nutrition

BLACKFOOT — Popular for their color, flavor and health benefits, 'purple potatoes' are in hot demand across the country, prompting growers and distributors in East Idaho to step up to the plate.
Lanae Workman, marketing executive for Potandon Produce in Idaho Falls, said that the purple (or blue-skinned) potatoes have been in the news recently "for their abundance of antioxidants and nutrients," not found in the lighter-skinned potatoes.

Famous Idaho Potatoes travel across country

POCATELLO — On Wednesday at the 2013 Potato Conference in Pocatello, Frank Muir, the president and CEO of the Idaho Potato Commission, gave a report to local farmers about the Idaho Potato truck tour that traveled across the United States to promote Idaho and its famous crop, potatoes.
Because the tour was such a success, the Idaho Potato Commission is sending the Ferrari Red potato truck out on another tour. The dates of the up coming tour are tentatively from Memorial Day to Labor day.

Renaissance Fair continues tonight

Are you ready for a Renaissance Fair?
Come join the fun at 6:30 o'clock tonight on stage at the Blackfoot Performing Arts Center (BPAC), 870 S. Fisher in Blackfoot.
Thirteenth century England is alive and well in Blackfoot. Banners and stained glass windows are hung on stage. Music, costumes, color, food and fun fill the evening.
The annual celebration incorporates the talents of the three choirs at Blackfoot High School (BHS)—Concert, Acappella and Madrigal.
Bart and Dana Brown are the king and queen of these festivities.

Ag industry becomes social savvy

Agriculture and social media go hand in hand these days as farmers, ranchers and ag companies throughout the state embrace social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest to communicate with consumers and business contacts. The trend was evident at the Idaho Potato Conference in Pocatello this week, as vendors were seen tapping on laptops, iPads and iPhones throughout the day.

No recall election despite rumors

BLACKFOOT — Rumors of a recall election(s) have been circulating.
"There is not a hint of a recall election at this time," said Marlene Jensen, the County Clerk's Election Director.
"People need to go through a lot of steps for a recall election," she said.
First, they need to request and then submit a start-up petition, Jensen said. The county clerk's office must verify the signatures collected.
