Generous community helps families

BLACKFOOT — People and organizations in the Blackfoot community have donated $28,549 to the families of the three electrocution victims, said organizer Douglas Bowers.
"Each family will receive $9,516," Bowers said.
He delivered the money to the families at 6 p.m. on Friday.
"I'm thankful to God and this community for coming together to support the survivors of such a tragedy," Bowers said. "This is a great community effort.
"Some money came in anonymously," he said. "The Blackfoot Elks donated a sum from the Demolition Derby."

Fort Hall getting Sports and Wellness Complex

FORT HALL — The public got a sneak peek of the plans for the second phase of the new Shoshone-Bannock Sports and Wellness Complex at the Wellness Gathering held at the Shoshone-Bannock Hotel & Convention Center Friday afternoon. Architects, tribal officials and community members shared their vision for this state-of-the art facility designed to meet the wellness needs of a growing community.

Blackfoot native becomes first female two star general in Texas National Guard

CAMP MABRY, Texas — Brigadier General Joyce Stevens was promoted to the rank of Major General at the Texas Military Forces Museum in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday, Sept. 5. Stevens became the first female two star general in the Texas National Guard. The announcement was made by Adjutant General of Texas, Maj. Gen. John Nichols.
Assuming the dual roles of Commander for the Texas Army National Guard and Assistant Adjutant General in March 2009, Stevens serves as the principal advisor to The Adjutant General for all Army operations.

Fundraisers planned for Hansen family

BLACKFOOT — Friends and family of Brent and Emilie Hansen are working together with local Modern Woodmen of America Youth Service Clubs to raise funds to support the Hansen family.
Brent was killed in a recent motorcycle accident.
All money raised will go directly to supporting the Hansen family.

Fair breaks records as most attended ever

Eastern Idaho State Fair (EISF) officials have been busily crunching numbers since the fair ended on Saturday. The ending results revealed that the "Barnyard Birthday Bash" of 2012 will go down in the record books as the most attended fair in Blackfoot's history, setting a new attendance record of over 224,000 visitors. This beats the former record of 221,000 visitors set in 2009.

Community outraged

Patrons and school teachers are reacting to the news that Blackfoot School District officials denied Joyce Bingham's request to view copies of a payout from the school district's bank account in the amount of $105,428 on July 2, 2012.
Bingham discovered the payout while examining public records. The payment was made through Zion's Bank (Salt Lake City, UT) and is noted on the expenditure description as AP Contract Services.

The Demolition Derby sold out on Saturday night at the Eastern Idaho State Fair.
The Demo Derby is sponsored by the Blackfoot Elks.

Officials of Blackfoot School District No. 55 have rejected a patron's request to view copies of a payout in the amount of $105,428 on July 2, 2012.
Former Blackfoot High School teacher Joyce Bingham discovered the payout from the Blackfoot School District 55 Bank account when she examined public records. The payment was made using using 'Auto Pay-Zions Bank' (Salt Lake City, UT) and is noted on the expenditure description as AP Contract Services.

OFF-ROADING: Aug. 28, 12:09 a.m.: A woman said someone is driving a car in the pasture next to her house.

THEFT: Aug. 28, 9:24 a.m.: A woman said some juveniles were at her residence during the weekend and now four PSP games and two controllers are missing.

GUN THEFT: Aug. 28, 3:35 p.m.: A man said he loaned a gun to someone and it was stolen from his friends car.

BROKEN DOOR: Aug. 7:55 p.m.: A man said he came home and found his door kicked in. He said nothing has been taken.

District 55 moving forward to replace superintendent

September 11, 2012

Blackfoot School District 55 board members have implemented a plan to move forward in the process of replacing former superintendent Scott Crane, who resigned in June. The plan includes the implementation of a 15-member committee made up of teachers, administrators, students, business people and ethnic leaders, along with a series of public hearings within the district to gain community input on what they would like to see in a new superintendent.
