Blackfoot Police

STOLEN JACKET FOUND: April 23, 8:05 p.m.: A man said his daughter's jacket was stolen a few months ago and said he said another girl wearing the jacket today.

GANG ACTIVITY: April 24, 7:42 a.m.: A man said some gangsters took the camera down at his residence. He said they are outside his door right now but he cannot answer the door because he is barricaded inside.

SHOPLIFTING: April 24, 4:18 p.m.: A caller at the Cal Store said they have someone detained for shoplifting.

Blackfoot Elks distribute scholarships

BLACKFOOT — Twenty-four students in the third through eighth grades and from Arco, Aberdeen, Blackfoot, Mackay and Shelley received awards ranging from $30-$75 from Elks Lodge No. 1416 not only for their scholastic achievements but for who they are becoming as citizens on Thursday.
Most Valuable Student awards went to Wyatt Andreason $500, Camille Jolley $250, Kaylee Andreason $300, and Ashli Munger $500.
Daisha Cummings of Arco and Will Higham of Shelley were selected as Teenagers of the Year.

Carriers ready for food drive

BLACKFOOT — Nothing is more troubling than feeling hungry and not knowing when that desire will be satiated.
A parent splitting the last loaf of bread to be divided amongst the children, unsure of when they will be able to eat again and knowing full well that the food they were given will only dull the aches of unfilled bellies for a small moment.
This Saturday, May 12th, 2012, letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America will be collecting goodness and compassion of postal customers who participate in the 20th annual National Food Drive to “Stamp Out Hunger”.

Shelley, Firth fire bond on ballot

SHELLEY — Local heroes—the 24 volunteers who make up the Shelley fire district—want your vote.
The volunteer firemen are asking voters in the Shelley-Firth Fire District to approve the $1.7 million bond so a new fire station can be built in Shelley and to renovate the existing Firth fire station. This bond issue is on the Primary Election ballot. The election is set for Tuesday, May 15.
The cost to property owners in the fire district depends on the tax value of the person's property.

Ridge Crest students set new reading standard

The Blackfoot Firefighters Reading Challenge was issued to students in the Blackfoot and Snake River School Districts during February.
At an assembly Friday morning at Ridge Crest Elementary, Tony Catt, Blackfoot fireman and reading organizer, said, "You guys went way above and beyond everybody.
"Other schools would need to read 500,000 more minutes just to tie you."
Ridge Crest students read 1,573,671 minutes in 29 days.
For their victory prize, firefighters will serve lunch to the whole school before the end of the school year. The school also received a check for $100.

Chase suspect awaiting evaluation, facing charges

Jeremy Robert Andrus, age 30, of Blackfoot is awaiting a mental examination at Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello after leading sheriff's deputies on a high speed chase through the Fort Hall Reservation Wednesday night.
Charges of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer in a motor vehicle, aggravated assault and attempted kidnapping second degree/not for ransom were filed against Andrus on Friday.
Andrus was taken into custody after a pursuit and standoff during which he threatened to commit suicide.
The incident started as a domestic dispute and then escalated from there.

Dreher named Blackfoot's DYW

BLACKFOOT — The theme was "Once Upon A Time..." and it was indeed a fairy tale evening for the audience and participants alike at the Distinguished Young Women of Blackfoot program at Blackfoot's Performing Art Center Wednesday evening; especially for Heidi Dreher, daughter of Dean and Lee Ann Dreher, who was was named Blackfoot's Distinguished Young Woman (DYW) of the Year.

BHS debaters qualify for nationals

May 4, 2012

BLACKFOOT — Five Blackfoot High School debaters have qualified to compete at nationals.
Sophomore Blake Dewveall is the Idaho gold medal winner for Extemporaneous Speaking.
The team of Marquette Lawrence and Brandon Turner will compete in public forum. Both students are juniors.
Senior Tylie Polatis is competing in Lincoln-Douglas debate.
The National Forensic League competition is June 11-15 in Indianapolis, Ind.
Senior Brad Carter qualified to compete in Lincoln-Douglas debate at the Catholic National Forensic League (CNFL) competition May 25-27 in Baltimore, Md.

One can't help but notice the sparkle in her eyes as Blackfoot native Monica Nevarez talks about her love of Zumba and her new business venture: Centi-Z-Team. It's a Zumba fitness center, opening May 7 in the El Centenario Event Center (formerly Ridley's Grocery Store) in Blackfoot.
Nevarez describes Zumba as a "calorie-burning Latin inspired-dance fitness workout" that is taking the world and Blackfoot by storm.
"Zumba is amazing," Nevarez said. "Everyone should try it at least once."
