BLACKFOOT — As they moved past the shelves at the Bingham County Historical Society's gallery, Lane and Chris Wood stopped and checked out the photographs.
"This is pretty cool," Lane said as he examined a photograph. "I remember most of these buildings. A lot of them are gone now."
Kevin Rupe pored over an aerial photograph of downtown Blackfoot dating from the 1950s. He tried to pick out Alice Street and the lot on which Rupe's Burgers now stands. His family has owned the business for nearly 50 years.

RIVERSIDE — Like a lot of other people, Verdus Ostberg enjoys antiques.
Many of those he owns have special meaning.
Included in his collection are a couple of cross-cut saws his father used in a 1940s logging operation, a 1942 military truck used in that same operation.
"My dad bought three acres of sagebrush in Moreland," Ostberg recalled. "I was raised as a logger. I drove Cat and skidded logs when I was 10 years old."
Also included in Ostberg's collection are his mother's 1940s era "washing machine" and steam iron.
BLACKFOOT — The City of Blackfoot plans to draft an ordinance to ban texting while driving.
Speaking at the Blackfoot City Council Meeting Tuesday, Blackfoot Police Chief Dave Moore said because the Idaho legislature failed to pass a texting while driving ban for the second year, local cities must take action to promote public safety in their communities. Twin Falls and Meridian have already banned texting while driving. Rexburg is considering a ban.
"The issue we have is one I feel should have been taken care of by the Idaho legislature," Moore said. "I am frustrated."

BLACKFOOT – Bingham County Commissioners rejected the latest proposal from MSW Green Energy to build a waste-to-energy plant at the Bingham County Transfer Station.
Officials from MSW Green and the president of GGI Energy from Plano, Texas, were in Blackfoot last week to present their latest proposal to the Bingham County Commissioners.
After listening to the proposal from GGI Energy, Bingham County Commissioner Cleone Jolley said, “I’m not going to negotiate any project with MSW Green.
“I’m going to court; I’m going to get this settled.”
BLACKFOOT — The water level on the Snake River near Blackfoot continues to rise as the combination of additional precipitation, snowmelt and reservoir releases adds to the water's volume.
The Snake River near Blackfoot is expected to crest at 9.34 feet early Wednesday morning before slowly subsiding through the rest of the week, according to the National Weather Service's Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service. Action stage is 9.5 feet, with flood stage at 10 feet.
"Right now it's at 9.02 feet," Bingham County Emergency Management Director Craig Rowland said.
ABERDEEN — Tierney Warren won the title of Aberdeen’s 2012 Distinguished Young Woman Saturday evening.
As the master of ceremonies said, “The DYW title winner is not just a competitor but a winner from a group of winners.”
The eight Aberdeen High School juniors were judged on interview, fitness, talent, self-expression and scholastics. They performed before a crowd that nearly filled the Aberdeen Middle School gymnasium.
Tierney not only won a $1,200 scholarship for the 2012 DYW title, she also won scholarships for interview, fitness and talent.
BLACKFOOT — Approximately 90 men, women and children walked a mile through downtown Blackfoot on Saturday to speak out against sexual assault and gender violence in the first "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" event. Participants raised and donated more than $3,600 for the Bingham Crisis Center.

BLACKFOOT — Blackfoot High School students swept the cabinet-making competition in the Idaho Skills USA competition April 7 and 8 in Boise.
Senior Dallin Evans placed first; senior Taylor Sandow placed second and Cody Cunningham placed third.
This is the ninth year in a row that a BHS cabinetry student has placed first at state. The top winner in each category qualifies to compete at the national level of Skills USA June 20-25 in Kansas City, Mo.
At the national level, Evans will be competing against 45 or 46 state winners, said BHS vocational cabinet teacher, Pete Golinveaux.
BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot School Board of Trustees held a special meeting Friday to address district policies that conflict with newly-passed state laws.
The board approved a resolution on a 3-2 vote revoking portions of 18 board policies regarding personnel now in conflict with laws passed and enacted during the legislative session. The policies include suspension of employees, recruitment of certificated employees, employment contracts, extra-duty assignments, and the release, evaluation and probation of certificated employees.
