BLACKFOOT â€” After back-to-back treys by Blackfoot's Beau Hoskins and Trae Pilster the Broncos and the Russets were locked at 48-48 with just over a minute remaining.
On the ensuing offensive possession, Shelley point guard McKay Cannon hit a streaking Chad Cather behind the Blackfoot press for a quick lay up, giving the Russets a lead that they never surrendered in a huge 55-48 victory at Blackfoot High School.
BLACKFOOT â€” The Snake River Lady Panthers built a double-digit first half lead and then held off a late charge by the Blackfoot Lady Broncos too complete the season sweep of the cross river rivals with a 47-43 victory on Saturday evening.
"I think that this win means a lot to the girls and certainly to the fans," Snake River head coach Steven Morton said. "For us, this was an important game but not nearly as important as our five remaining league games. It was a fun game that helps us be competitive in our league."
FIRTH - The Firth Lady Cougars welcomed Snake River to town on Friday night and nearly upset the taller, more experienced Lady Panthers. Trailing by only three points entering the final quarter, the Lady Cougars finally ran out of gas and Snake River was able to pull away to a 35-23 win in a contest much closer than the final score would indicate.
"I am so proud of the way the girls played tonight," said Coach Sharla Cook. "We had a tough road trip last night and I know the girls were exhausted, but they dug down deep tonight and played their hearts out."
POCATELLO â€” Blackfoot got down by as many as 9-points during Friday evenings road contest at Century High School but in the end found a way to fight through a physical affair for a 39-37 victory.
"This is a different district and it's a more physical district than we are used too," Blackfoot coach Mike Anderson said. "We came into it thinking in our heads that it is going to be a physical game but until your actually in it, you can't understand it."
THOMAS â€” A pair of highly touted 3Ã… wrestling programs squared off on the mats Thursday evening as the Snake River Panthers hosted the Teton Redskins for a non-conference duel at Snake River High School.
At the end of a hotly contested match, the Panthers emerged victorious with a 45-30 team score as the Panthers won 8 of the 14 matches, 4 of those by pin.
SHELLEY - In a contest that was as exciting as it was entertaining, the Shelley Lady Russets toppled the Skyline Lady Grizzlies 69-65 in overtime.
Sadee Wattenbarger nailed a banked in three pointer with 13.7 seconds remaining in regulation to knot the score at 57 and tipped a pass away on defense to send the game into the extra stanza.
"Sadee played huge tonight," said Coach Burke Davis. "She is our tallest post player and is always out sized, but never out hustled or out played. She gives us her best every night."
BLACKFOOT â€” The Blackfoot Broncos opened up the 2011 portion of their basketball schedule on Wednesday evening, facing off with the team that handed them a double-digit defeat just a month ago.
On Wednesday, the Broncos avenged that set back by turning in a stellar defensive performance for a 59-56 win over 5A Idaho Falls.
"I think that the biggest thing tonight was rebounding," senior guard Collin Rockwood said. "The first time we played these guys they kicked our butts on rebounding but tonight we did a better job and played as a team."
POCATELLO â€” The Blackfoot Lady Broncos got behind the eight ball early in their road date at Highland High School on Tuesday evening and were never able to recover as the Lady Rams completed the season sweep of the Lady Broncos with a 53-19 victory.
"Offensively we didn't execute as well as we are capable of but honestly, I am really optimistic about how far they have come offensively," Blackfoot head coach Mike Kirkham said. "Against a team like Highland, it didn't show though."
