Panthers give Coach Coombs win #300

POCATELLO - Recent history pointed to a tough game for the Snake River Panthers as they prepared to take on the Bear Lake Bears Thursday night in an elimination game of the District 5 3A tournament. After all, Bear Lake had dominated the Panthers and the other teams in the fifth district all season, but that is why they play the games this time of year.

Trojans run past Russets

RIGBY — The Shelley Russets inaugural season in the 4A High Country Conference came to an end on Thursday night as the Rigby Trojans raced past the Russets for a 78-58 victory.
"We started the game well but even then you just didn't sense that spirit which is understandable because of the heartbreaker that we suffered on Tuesday," Shelley head coach Dave Hadley said. "We just didn't realize the urgency and once Rigby got a little lead they were able to get real aggressive and then you could just sense us tensing up."

Cougars capture fifth straight district title

ST. ANTHONY — With three minutes remaining in the 2A Nuclear Conference boys basketball championship game, Butte County emptied their bench in a sign of defeat. Moments later the four time defending champion Firth Cougars did the same and after a few scruffy moments, the buzzer sounded on a 56-29 Cougar victory as Firth celebrated their fifth straight district title.

Panthers stay alive with win over Beavers

POCATELLO - It is often said that offense is for the highlight reels and defense wins games. The Snake River Panthers turned on the defense Tuesday night as they completely dominated the American Falls Beavers in District 5 basketball tournament action 57-38.

Russets Oh, So close in district title game

REXBURG — The Shelley Russets held a 9-point lead heading to the tail end of the third quarter at Madison High School on Tuesday night. Call it the Madison mystique or the Hawkins magic, whatever the case was, Shelley got caught up in a late wave of a Madison run and when that wave came crashing down, Madison had prevailed in the High Country Conference title game by the final tally of 63-54.

Shelley man headed to Hall of Fame

SHELLEY – A short time ago, Bryan Huntsman’s old wrestling coach, Alan Gardner, came to Huntsman’s office and handed him an envelope.
In that envelope was a letter of congratulations for Huntsman’s selection for induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Idaho Chapter.
“Honestly, my first thoughts were, ‘I’m not deserving of this,’” Huntsman said.
Huntsman’s induction into the Hall, scheduled in May, is as an outstanding American who was a wrestler at some time in his career.

Eagles trip up Panthers

POCATELLO — Who says that the fifth district doesn't call fouls? On Friday night, the officials blew the whistle 48 times, 30 of those against Snake River, as the Panthers fell to Marsh Valley 53-45 in the first round of the 3A fifth district tournament.
"It was one of those nights," Snake River head coach Bob Coombs said. "We still had our chance which is all that you can ask for."
Marsh Valley took advantage of the whistles, knocking down 31 of 40 free throw attempts while Snake River were only able to connect on 13 of the 20 charity tosses that they received.

Russets knock off Knights 82-72

IDAHO FALLS — The Shelley Russets entered the Dungeon at Hillcrest High School on Thursday night, looking to knock off the top seed in the 4A High Country Conference tournament.
At the end of a thrilling, foul infested affair, Shelley did just that, advancing to the conference title game with a 82-72 victory over the Knights.

Panthers qualify 15 for state

THOMAS — The Snake River Panthers will be well represented at next weekends State Tournament in Nampa. On Thursday, Snake River qualified 15 grapplers to the state tournament, of which 5 will enter the event as the fifth district champions, as they finished a close second to American Falls 211-196 in the district tournament.

SHELLEY — The 4A High Country Conference sixth district wrestling tournament was held on Wednesday at Shelley High School. The twelve time defending district champion Blackfoot Broncos were once again tabbed as the favorite heading into the tournament and they didn't fail to disappoint, as they crowned 7 district champions and qualified 22-wrestlers to the state tournament en route to capturing their thirteenth straight district title with 505 team points.
