Eagles handle Lady Cougars 5-1 in season opener for both schools

FIRTH — With the dawn of a new season there is always nerves for both players and coaches.
But for second year head coach Trevor Clayson and the Firth girls soccer team the start of the 2014 season is a chance to get the programs first win in over year.
Standing in front of the Cougars and that first win Thursday afternoon was the defending 3A District 5 champ Marsh Valley Eagles.
It was't the start the Cougars had hoped for as the Eagles scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the game on the way to a 5-1 victory.

Late penalty kick gives Lady Broncos 3-2 win over Bees

IONA — New Blackfoot girls soccer coach Ramon Sanchez took his young Lady Broncos squad on the road for the first time on Tuesday at the ladies traveled to take on former district opponent Bonneville.
After playing to a hard fought draw with Idaho Falls in the rain in wind on Saturday, the Broncos got a taste of a warm day and sunny skies.
Sanchez learned quickly about how difficult being a coach can be as fatigue, injuries and a very tough and physical game gave the new head coach all he could handle.

Young Broncos drop season opener 4-1 to veteran Idaho Falls squad

IDAHO FALLS — Heading into Saturday's season opener Blackfoot boys head soccer coach Liam Pope knew his young squad was going to suffer some early season going pains.
After losing 13 of the 16 players on the 2013 varsity roster Pope and the young Broncos took to the field of the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex to take on a veteran Idaho Falls team on a cold and rainy morning.
Things did not start well for the Broncos as most of the opening 20 minutes was pent in the Broncos end as the aggressive and upperclassmen laden Tigers squad put the pressure on.

Blackfoot Baseball Club holding camp next week

BLACKFOOT — In cities the size of Blackfoot the youth baseball leagues serve as a feeder system for the high school program.
But what is more often than not the case in the local leagues is that the players are not coached by the same coaches from the time they start playing until they reach the high school level.
Local business owner and baseball coach Kevin Hayes with the help of the Next Level Baseball Academy in Pocatello is looking to change that.

Hard work pays off for Idaho State quarterback

Justin Arias is a student.   He is not only a student of the game of football but he is an excellent student in the classroom. Arias will leave Idaho State in December with his master's degree. That success in the classroom has correlated into success on the football field for the senior Bengal quarterback.  
"It is a personal character trait," Arias said. "If you are going to work hard in school it is going to translate into anything you want to do. If you want to succeed in anything you want to do, you will have to work hard."

Trio of cowboys headed to nationals

FIRTH — Firth High School graduate Layton Wasia has had quite the year.
He won the state wrestling championship in February after going undefeated, he then followed that up with a solid rodeo season leading District 4 as the all-around cowboy.
His success on the back of bulls during the spring earned Wasia a spot at the National High School Finals Rodeo that begins Sunday in Rock Springs, Wyo.
Wasia will compete in the bull riding event this week and is one of three Bingham County cowboys who will be making the short drive east to Rock Springs.

Blackfoot sweeps pair from Bear Lake 12-2, 10-3

BLACKFOOT — Offense, offense and more offense.
That was what the Blackfoot Broncos put on display on Tuesday afternoon against the visitors from Bear Lake.
The Broncos pounded out 19 hits and 22 runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Bears 12-2 in five innings and 10-3 at Blackfoot High School on a very warm Tuesday afternoon.
But it was not just the offense that the Broncos showcased on Tuesday, the Broncos also got two very good starts from pitchers Kyle Scott and Brady Pearson.

Madison sweeps a pair from Blackfoot

BLACKFOOT — It is getting to the point of the American Legion baseball season where games are coming at a fevered pace and the players are getting less and less time to recover.
Throw in the heat that began to set in on Tuesday and it means the home stretch of the season is going to be a long one for all of the legion teams the remainder of the summer.
Before heading to Jackson Hole on Thursday, the Broncos hosted a doubleheader with Madison on Tuesday and the visiting Cats walked away with a pair of wins 19-12 and 8-2 at Blackfoot High School.

Broncos late inning magic runs out as Pocatello earns doubleheader sweep

BLACKFOOT — After battling back to tie the second game of their doubleheader with the Pocatello Rebels on Tuesday at Blackfoot High School, the Broncos needed to score three runs in the bottom of the eighth to avoid a sweep.
But after getting one run on an sacrifice fly by Kyle Scott, the Broncos were unable to get the tying run across as they stranded the tying and winning runs on base to end the game.
Pocatello earned the doubleheader sweep with a pair of late rallies wining game one 8-4 and game two 8-7.

Reinke comes from behind to win Von Elm by three stokes

June 22, 2014

BLACKFOOT — Coming into Sunday's final round of the 53rd annual George Von Elm Golf Tournament Chris Reinke found himself sitting in fourth place three shots behind first round leader Clayton Brown.
By the end of the day Sunday Reinke found himself as the new Von Elm champion.
Reinke shot a final round 72 to win the tournament by three strokes shooting a 146 for the two days.
Josh Nunamaker and Nick Higham who started the day in Sunday tied for second, finished the tournament tied for second shooting a 149 for the weekend.
