JEANNETTE ELIZABETH PARMELEE POWELL

    Jeannette Elizabeth Parmelee Powell was born December 26, 1919, in Pocatello, Idaho to Bruce Eugene Parmelee and Winstead Davie Parmelee. Jeannette was 94 years old when she passed away in her sleep February 26, 2014, at The Willows, 898 Meridian in Blackfoot.
    Jeannette lived most of her life in the Springfield community, with time out for school and travels. Her parents were early day farmers, and until recently, Jeannette still lived in the house she grew up in with her only sibling, Jane Ritter of Maine (deceased).

Community rallies for young Blackfoot native with cancer

BLACKFOOT—Blackfoot native Jessie Woodland, 25, is dealing with one of life's toughest blows with grace and dignity; inspiring everyone she meets along the way.
A Blackfoot native, Jessie is at home battling a second round of gastric cancer. Her friends and family are rallying to help with her care and financial needs, while reaching out to the Ellen DeGeneres Show, in hopes of fulfilling one of Jessie's dreams - to meet Ellen.

Russets punch their ticket to state with 48-38 win over Bear Lake

POCATELLO — It wasn't exactly the easiest way to get to the state tournament, but facing a win or home home situation the Shelley Russets found a way to get the job done.
With a solid defensive first half and just enough offense down the stretch the Russets defeated Bear Lake in a 3A state play-in game 48-38 Saturday at Century High School in Pocatello.

General Mills sells Idaho grain operations

KANSAS CITY, KANSAS — Agspring announced on Feb. 27 that it has signed a definitive purchase agreement to acquire the General Mills’ grain operations in Idaho.  The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The transaction is expected to be completed before the end of May 2014.
The General Mills' grain operations in Idaho are in Newdale, Blackfoot, American Falls, Rockford, Idaho Falls, Pocatello and Schiller Siding.

Nine Bingham County wrestlers reach finals at state wrestling tournament in Nampa

NAMPA — All season long Blackfoot's Bryant Sargent has been focused on the goal of winning a state championship.
After the first day of the state wrestling tournament Sargent's goal is one match away.
The Balckfoot senior made it through the first day of the tournament unscathed and will take on Bonneville's Jared Bird today for the 170 pound 4A title at the Idaho Center in Nampa.
Sargent took down Nampa's Afton Silva in the first round 6-4, he then earned a win over Bishop Kelly's Mark Greene in round two to move on to the semifinals.
In the semifinals Sargent defeated Kuna's Braydon Shell by a score of 9-5 to take on Bird. Sargent and Bird have met a couple of times this season and have split each meeting.
Sargent is the only Bronco still alive to win a state title as Chase Wasia and Lane Hunt were defeated in the semifinals at 138 and 120 pounds respectively. Both will begin action today in the hunt for a top five finish.

Blackfoot man killed in Utah crash

CARBON COUNTY, UTAH — Jack Le Roy Seiber, 22, of Blackfoot was killed Thursday in a crash near Helper, Utah.
Seiber was traveling west on U.S. 6 in a Ford Escort and was hit Toyota 4Runner that spun out of control during a heavy downpour.
The driver of the 4Runner was not injured in the crash but two passengers in that vehicle were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident.

All-Bingham County girls basketball team

BLACKFOOT — Not even a week has passed since the Firth Lady Cougars raised the 2A state championship trophy at the Idaho Center in Nampa, but it is time for me to name the All-Bingham County girls basketball team.
The basketball season was full of exciting moments for the teams in Bingham County and saw improvement by some teams, a step backward by others and a lot of hope for the future.

Joyce Higgins Jensen, 72

Joyce Higgins Jensen, 72, passed away peacefully in her home on Feb. 19, 2014, surrounded by her family. After a courageous battle with cancer, she enjoyed a glorious reunion on the other side of the veil in the arms of her husband, parents, brothers and sister, and her Savior.
Joyce was born Jan. 13, 1942, in Blackfoot, Idaho, to Arthur Eugene and Thelda Romreill Higgins. She was the youngest of seven children, six of whom survived to adulthood. She was raised in the Riverside-Thomas area, and attended local schools, graduating in 1960 from Snake River High School.

Firth girls basketball team raises 2A title banner

FIRTH — Firth High School students and staff celebrated the victory of the girls' basketball team on Wednesday morning as the banner for the Girls' 2A Real Dairy Shootout State Basketball Championship banner was raised.
This is the second girls' basketball championship in the school's history. The first was won in 1987.

Mother-daughter celebrate Firth win

FIRTH — The mother-daughter team of Monica Backlund Nelson and her daughter Bailey Nelson share some special memories centering around the Firth Girls' Basketball championship.
Both played on a Firth Girls' Basketball team that won the state championship.
Monica was part of the Firth team that won the first state championship in school history in 1987.
Bailey was on the 2014 Firth championship team.
