Panthers edge out Broncos 7-6 in season opener

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Broncos and the Snake River Panthers opened their 2012 softball season on Friday afternoon under a bright sunny sky and balmy temperatures for spring softball in Southeastern Idaho.
At the end of the day it was the visiting Panthers who emerged victorious as they held off a seventh inning rally by the Broncos for the 7-6 non-conference win.

Signatures verified on recall petition

The possibility of a recall election against Blackfoot School District No. 55 trustee Pete Lipovac increased on Friday.
Marlene Jensen, the Bingham County election director, verified the 133 signatures on the recall petition which has been circulating for the past few weeks.
"We have sent certified letters to Mr. Lipovac and to the school board," Jensen said. "Upon receipt of the letter Mr. Lipovac has five days to resign."
If Lipovac doesn't resign, Jensen said, the recall election will go forward and could be on the ballot at the same time as the primary election on May 15.

Blake begins campaign for county commissioner

Shelley native Merrill Blake, a businessman and entrepreneur, is running for Bingham County Commission Seat 1 as a Republican. That seat is currently held by Cleone Jolley, who is retiring.
"I am running for county commissioner because my 40-plus years as a successful businessman and as a volunteer in my community have given me the experience and knowledge needed to step into the position of county commissioner and be effective on Day One," Blake said.

Ogden running for county commissioner

Kirk Ogden has worked for Bingham County in the Road and Bridge Department for the past 22 years. He is currently a supervisor for the crusher crew.
"I'm the little guy," Ogden said of his decision to run for Bingham County Commission Seat 3. A. Ladd Carter currently holds that post. "I'm just the normal everyday guy who gets a paycheck. I want to represent everyone."
Ogden is a native of Bingham County and a graduate of Blackfoot High School. He, like his opponent, is running as a Republican. The primary election is May 15.

Duff seeks state House seat

Mike Duff of Blackfoot has announced his candidacy for the Idaho House of Representatives, Legislative District 31 Seat A. Legislative District 31 comprises all of Bingham County. Duff is seeking the seat left vacant by the retiring Representative Dennis Lake of Blackfoot.
“My 30 years of government and political experience have uniquely trained me to serve the citizens of Bingham County and address the broad range of complex issues facing us all today,” Duff said.

Garth Powell, 48, formerly of Moore, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2012 in Caldwell. 
Funeral service will be Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Moore LDS Stake Center, with a viewing from 11:30 ~ 12:30 pm prior to service. Interment will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery under the direction of Anderson Family Funeral Home, 2555 N. Hwy 93, Arco.

Luella Jean Peck Wells, 80

Luella Jean Peck Wells, 80 of Blackfoot, passed away March 7, 2012 at Capitol Care in Boise of lingering health problems.
Luella was born Jan. 20, 1932 in Burley to LuRoy Peck and Nettie Jane Wheeler Peck. She spent her younger life in Aberdeen and graduated from Aberdeen High School.
On Nov. 4, 1950 she married Delos Hale Wells. They lived the farming and ranching life for some years in the Springfield and Sterling area.

Shelley rancher seeks county commission seat

Matthew Thompson of Shelley is running for Bingham County Commissioner from District 1 as a Republican.
The length of the county commissioner’s term rotates through the three commissioners. In 2012, the commissioner elected from District 1 will serve a two-year term.
“I have been interested in politics at all levels and I think it’s time to get involved,” he said.

We The People fundraiser successful

Blackfoot High School government teacher Holly Kartchner was thrilled with the support her "We The People" students received from the community on Thursday night.
We The People is a class which learns about our democratic government and meets other schools in a competitive environment. The Broncos have won the state competition and the right to compete on the national level in Washington, D.C.
