BOISE, ID â€“ The state tennis tournament got under way on Friday morning as a 10 person contingent of Blackfoot Broncos took to the Boise area courts against the finest 4A field in the state.
Playing at the Boise Racquet and Swim club, Capital High and Borah High School the team got off to one of the better starts on the day as they picked up wins in girls singles, boys doubles, girls doubles and mixed doubles in each of their respective first round matches as the girls squad sits in sixth place as a team with 7.5 points and the boys are in seventh place with 5.5 points.
CINCINNATI, Ohio â€“ Guy C Van Orden, 59, died Friday, May 11, 2012 at his home in Cincinnati where he lost his valiant battle with pancreatic cancer.
Guy was born Oct. 6, 1952 in Blackfoot, the son of Cyril E and Nola Rae Wheeler Van Orden. He was the oldest of six children.
Guy grew up in Riverside and attended Moreland and Riverside Elementary, Snake River Junior High and Snake River High School.
His family moved to Spokane, Wash., in 1968, where Guy attended and graduated from Shadle Park High School in 1970.
CONCERT INCIDENT: May 11, 11:21 p.m.: A man said he was at a concert at the El Centenario and he was slammed into a window while being removed.
TRESPASS: May 12, 12:43 a.m.: A man said he caught a 16-year-old male on his property. He said he has had previous issues with him attempting to steal cigarettes.
DRIVE-THRU FIGHT: May 12, 5:30 a.m.: A caller at McDonald's said there are four men fighting in the drive-thru. An arrest was made.
James Henry Haroldsen, 73, of Pingree, Idaho passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center due to an aortic dissection.
He was born June 22, 1938 in Idaho Falls, Idaho to Ancel Henry Haroldsen and Eliza Eldora Andersen Haroldsen. He grew up in Idaho Falls and graduated from Idaho Falls High School.
James continued his education at Brigham Young University and earned his Bachelorâ€™s Degree in Animal Husbandry.
Merle Hillman Eskelsen, of Idaho Falls, formerly of BlackfootÂ passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at the age of 85.Â Merle was the wife of the late Milton Dwayne Eskelsen of Blackfoot, Idaho.
Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Merle was born on January 8, 1927, the daughter of Gheen Hillman and Eva Buxton in Driggs, Teton County, Idaho.Â
BLACKFOOT â€” Members of the Blackfoot School District board of trustees ratified next year's contract with the Blackfoot Education Association at Thursday's meeting.
According to BEA Co-President Bobbie Jo Steffensen, the district offer is for a 1.25 percent pay increase to the members' base salaries. In addition, she said, the district will pay for any increases in insurance premiums for the next year.
Board members heard a report on teacher evaluations from committee member Alicia Higginson and on Pay for Performance from Anthony Peterson.
BLACKFOOT â€” The rumor mill is swirling around Bingham Memorial Hospital (BMH).
"We are concerned about it [BMH]; that everything is upright," said Bingham County Commissioner A. Ladd Carter. "There have been ongoing allegations of wrong doing.
"The hospital now employs 600 employees," he said. "It has a significant impact on the community.
"We want to see it be successful," said Carter.
An executive session is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday with the BMH Board of Directors and the County Commissioners.
IDAHO FALLS â€” Geoffrey Salem Elawadly, age 24, was sentenced Thursday for the second degree murder of Anthony (A.J.) Camp on March 22, 2011.
Seventh District Judge Jon J. Shindurling sentenced Elawadly to a minimum of 10 years to life in the Idaho Department of Correction.
Elawadly had confessed to second degree murder. In the plea agreement, the deadly weapon enhancement and the two counts of aggravated assault were dismissed.
Elawadly's seven year indeterminate sentence for possession of a controlled substance will be served concurrently with the second degree murder sentence.
ONTARIO, OR â€“ Senior hurler Shane Parkinson struck out thirteen Tigers and Zane Stephenson drove in three runs as the Snake River Panthers advanced to the winners side of the state baseball tournament bracket with a 5-0 victory over Timberlake on Thursday morning.
â€śThis was big,â€ť Parkinson said. â€śThis is my senior year and I definitely didnâ€™t want anything but the winners bracket this year.â€ť
Parkinson was big all day long as he limited the Timberlake lineup to just two hits on the day in the complete game victory.
(Boise) â€“ Seventh District Judge Jon J. Shindurling issued a death warrant today for Richard A. Leavitt for the July 1984 murder of Danette Elg in Blackfoot, Idaho.Â The execution date is set for June 12, 2012.
Leavitt, convicted of the brutal murder of 31 year old Danette Elg in 1984, will be given lethal injection.
Elg was murdered in her home after being attacked with a knife, sustaining 15 separate stab and slash wounds and sexually mutilated. Prosecutors say that Leavitt cut out her sexual organs while she died or shortly after.
