Local shooter among qualifiers

BLACKFOOT — Marianna Molinari of Blackfoot is one of six shooters from Idaho who have qualified to participate in the Junior Olympics National Championships in April.
Molinari and the others from clubs in Blackfoot, Boise, Post Falls and Twin Falls earned their spots through their finishes in the recent State Junior Olympics competition in Twin Falls.
Winners at nationals in Colorado Springs, Colo., could receive invitations to be on the National Development Team which competes internationally.

ISTCS students earn some hardware

BLACKFOOT — Five sixth grade boys at Idaho Science and Technology Charter School travelled to Boise last weekend to compete in the Future City regional competition and returned home with some hardware.
Not only were they recognized for the being the team that travelled the furthest, they also won the Materials Exotica award, which is given to the team with the most creative use of materials and materials science in the design of their city.

Snake River band receives Pepsi grant

THOMAS — It's official. The Snake River Band program has earned a $25,000 grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project.
Band director Randy Brady was notified of this good news Sunday evening.
"It was a long-shot," Brady said. "It's pretty remarkable that we were seventh among 224 grant requests.
"We are very, very grateful for the support," he said.
The main purpose [for entering this contest] was to get larger instruments; to start to make the band more competitive," Brady said, "and to offer a quality band experience."

I.F. Police Make Multiple Attempted Strangulation Arrests

IDAHO FALLS - Idaho Falls Police arrested three men this past weekend for attempted strangulation in three separate incidents.
Jade W. Farley, 32, of St. Anthony was arrested Saturday in the 700 block of Lindsay after he got into an altercation with a woman at the Le Ritz Hotel.
Adam Ryan Ian Butler, 26, of Idaho Falls was arrested Sunday night after he attempted to strangle a woman at a residence at the corner of Anderson and Cassia Avenue. The victim also reported that Butler held her against will.

Orris Ray Eyler, 83

January 23, 2012

Orris Ray Eyler, 83, of Blackfoot and a longtime resident of Pocatello, passed away at 7:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012 at the Bingham Extended Care Facility in Blackfoot.
Orris was born to Orris Ray Eyler Sr and Bernita Middleton Eyler. He lived most of his life in Pocatello and was active in aviation; being a pilot and owning his own plane. He also enjoyed collecting antique guns and built many boats.
He graduated from Idaho State University in auto body repair and aircraft mechanics. He served the US Army during the Korean Conflict for two years in Germany.

Eugene Henry Gabert, 83

Eugene Henry Gabert, 83, of Blackfoot passed away Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012 at Bingham Memorial Hospital surrounded by family and following a long and extended battle with severe complications from diabetes.
Gene was born the last of nine children Dec. 22, 1928 at the family homestead in Aberdeen to David and Emily [Emilie or Amelia] Gabert, formerly of Consta/Svastopol, Romania; David was the son of Andrew [Andreus] Gabert and Emily the daughter of Jacob Schweigert, born 1846, Borodino, Russia; David and Emily settled around 1911 at Flat Top, then Aberdeen.

Michael Lawrence Lambert, 58

Michael Lawrence Lambert, 58, of Idaho Falls, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012 at his home following an extended illness.
Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home of Blackfoot and will be announced.

LeRoy Del Brooks, of Blackfoot, passed away Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012 at his home following an extended illness.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, 2012 at Hawker Funeral Home. The family will meet with friends and relatives from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012 and again for one hour prior to service at the funeral home.

Cooking is in Fort Hall man's DNA

FORT HALL — As a boy Michael Mendez often helped his mother and grandmother with the cooking.
"I remember stirring a pot or rolling out pie dough for Grandma or my Mom," said Mendez, now the Food and Beverage Manager at Fort Hall Casino. "Grandma was famous for her cooking when the family ran the Oregon Trail (restaurant at Fort Hall).
"I enjoy cooking," Mendez continued, noting that he was the head cook at the casino from 2005-2008, took a break to work as a cook for ON Semiconductor's staff operation, then returned.

Snake River runs away from Bear Lake

THOMAS — Shayla Christensen scored 17 points, 10 during a 20-3 run, to lift Snake River to a 52-32 win over Bear Lake in Fifth District girls' basketball on Friday.
Snake River led just 12-11 after one period. Christensen had six points in the second period as the Panthers built a 24-14 advantage. She added four more points as they opened the third period with an 8-0 burst.
After Bear Lake closed within 35-25 on Chaylie Hulme's two free throws early in the fourth quarter, Christensen started Snake River on a 13-5 run to put the Panthers ahead 48-30.
