Bartolo hat trick lifts Broncos into state title game

CALDWELL – The Blackfoot Broncos rode the right foot of senior Gerardo Bartolo all the way into the 4A State Soccer Championship game. The talented striker knocked in not one, not two, but all three Blackfoot goals in a hard fought 3-2 victory over Skyview on Friday afternoon at Caldwell High School.
“Right from the beginning of the game you could tell that we were all focused and ready to go,” Bartolo said. “We want to win a championship so badly and we came out attacking, attacking and just taking the game to them. To get three goals, my senior year, well that feels amazing.”

Panthers cruise into state title game with 6-1 win

CALDWELL – The Snake River Panthers took a big step towards a 3A state championship on Friday afternoon as they turned in a convincing performance against perennial soccer power Payette with a 6-1 victory.
“The guys just came out and killed it today,” Snake River head coach Trevor Peterson said. “They came out and played an awesome game and I couldn’t be happier.”
Snake River drew first blood in the game in the eighteenth minute of play when a Payette player was called for an intentional hand ball on a ball that was heading for an open goal on a corner kick.

Martha Deon Munson, 91

Martha Deon Munson, 91, formerly of Blackfoot, passed away Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011 in Washington, Utah.
Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home and will be announced.

Geott C. Ferris, 90

October 21, 2011

Geott C. Ferris, 90, of Blackfoot passed away Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011 at the
Renaissance Assisted Living in Blackfoot.
He was born Jan, 4, 1921 in Weiser to Ora C. Ferris and Vina May Dawson Ferris.
He attended school through the eighth grade. He grew up on the family farm in Weiser and later ran the farm for a number of years. He also lived in Blackfoot and Aberdeen.
He was very active in 4-H while on the farm. He also enjoyed hunting. After he moved to Aberdeen, Geott always raised a large garden.

Walter ‘Vern’ Inskeep, 77

Walter “Vern” Inskeep 77, of Aberdeen passed away Monday Oct. 17, 2011. He was a loving husband, father, and friend with a wonderful sense of humor that will be missed greatly.
Vern was born July 22, 1934, in Blackfoot to Walter and Esther Jensen Inskeep. He was raised in the Pingree-Aberdeen area, where he attended school.
Vern joined the Army where he attended the Sixth Army Food School. He served as a cook for the Army officers in Fort Lewis, Wash.
On August 12, 1955, he married Jean Jarrett. They were married for 10 years, had one son, Major, and were late divorced.

Blackfoot High's Kartchner receives ISJ education award

POCATELLO — Blackfoot High School government teacher Holly Kartchner was surprised when her name was left off the program of the Idaho State Journal's Business and Achievement Awards on Thursday.
She was more surprised a few minutes later when she was named as the 2011 recipient of the Education/K-12 award.
"I believe we need to fight the arrogance of ignorance," she said in accepting the award. "It's my responsibility to destroy that arrogance of ignorance and let (her students) become the community members she wants to be."

Moreland students get demonstration from INL firemen

MORELAND — In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, firemen from the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) spoke to students at Moreland Elementary Thursday.
"In case of a fire in your house, what are you supposed to do?" asked INL fireman Todd Leavitt.
"Get out," was the reply.
"What if you can't get out of your room? Are you supposed to hide in a closet or under the bed?"
"No," the students replied.
"When we come crawling in to find you, slap the floor hard so we can hear you," Leavitt said.
"What if your clothes are on fire?" he asked.

Lloyd resigns from Blackfoot school board

BLACKFOOT — Blackfoot School Board Trustee Bryce Lloyd submitted his resignation at the board meeting Thursday and Dr. Taylor Johansen was appointed to fill the vacancy.
In tending his resignation, Lloyd said he didn't have the time to devote to the school board and to his professional and personal obligations. Lloyd said he spoke to his constituents in Groveland to receive recommendations on who should be appointed to fill the Zone 4 vacancy. He recommended Johansen, who was approved on a 4-1 vote with Trustee Pete Lipovac casting the dissenting vote.

District 55 denies charter school request

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot School Board of Trustees denied the charter request for the Idaho STEM Academy at their meeting Thursday and referred the decision to the Idaho Public Charter School Commission. The decision was unanimous.
Mark Fisk, a member of the founding board of the Idaho STEM Academy, said the decision was not unexpected.
"We'll move forward," he said. "We're confident we will be chartered."
Whether the charter high school, which will cater to science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, will be able to open next year is unclear.

Late Bartolo goal lifts Broncos to semi-finals

CALDWELL – The High Country Conference champion Blackfoot Broncos opened their state tournament on Thursday afternoon as they tangled with Minico in the first round at Brothers Field on the campus of Caldwell High School.
In a game that seemed to be played almost entirely in the Spartans end of the field, Blackfoot was able to prevail and advance to the semi-finals with a hard fought 1-0 victory.
