Shelley man arrested for rape

IDAHO FALLS — Idaho Falls Police arrested a Shelley man Thursday after he allegedly raped an 18-year-old woman back in September.
Clay J. Heline, 18, of Shelley, was arrested and booked into the Bonneville County Jail. According to police reports, the victim reported to police on Sept. 22 that she had been raped at a park in Idaho Falls on Sept. 21. The victim said she met Heline online and agreed to meet him at Tautphaus Park. The victim and a friend met with Heline at the park.

Broncos shut out Russets 28-0

BLACKFOOT — It was senior night at Blackfoot High School as the Blackfoot Broncos tangled with cross county rival Shelley for a High Country Conference tilt on the grid iron.
Playing in a steady drizzle for the entirety of the game, the two teams slugged it out with Blackfoot pulling away in the second half for a 28-0 victory.
"We did a lot better job in the second half defensively," Blackfoot head coach Stan Buck said. "The kids really stepped it up and played well, especially in the second half."

Crofts signs plea agreement

BLACKFOOT — Byron Delray Crofts appeared before magistrate Judge Robert C. Brower Thursday to answer to the charges of first degree kidnapping, rape and battery with intent to commit a serious crime and, in a separate charge, injury to jail.
Crofts had broken a window in the county jail in that charge.
Last week, Magistrate Judge James Martsch had added a persistent violator enhancement to Crofts' charges.
The alleged victim of the more serious charge of first degree kidnapping, rape and battery with intent to commit a serious crime was in the courtroom Thursday.

BYU's Vocal Point to perform at Snake River High

THOMAS — Brigham Young University's a cappella group Vocal Point has been delivering show-stopping performances on NBC's "The Sing-Off" the past two weeks, and they will be bringing their high-energy, entertaining show to Bingham County Nov. 5.
Sponsored by Snake River Fine Arts, Vocal Point will perform at Snake River High School at 7 p.m. that day. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling 684-9684.

Ila Backlund, 94

Ila Blanch Smith Backlund, 94, our loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, at the Gables in Shelley.
Ila was born Nov. 20, 1916 at home in Shelley to her parents, Francis Thomas Smith and Myrtle Anderson Smith. She was the sixth of 13 children. She grew up on the family farm where she learned to work at an early age. She attended and graduated from the schools in Shelley

Terry Birch, 66

Terry Erickson Birch, 66, of Blackfoot passed away Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011 at her home.
Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home and will be announced in a full obituary.

Seniors learn about scams

BLACKFOOT — Representatives from Idaho's Office of the Attorney General met with senior citizens in Blackfoot Wednesday to discuss current scams and to provide consumer protection materials geared to seniors.
Lonny Tutko and Kim Youmans from the Consumer Protection Division of the Office of the Attorney General came to the Bingham County Senior Citizen Center to address the senior population as part of an ongoing consumer outreach program.
"We believe the best prevention to consumer fraud is information," Tutko said.

Deadline for write-in candidates looms

BLACKFOOT — People who would like to run as write-in candidates for city elections have until 5 p.m. on Tuesday to file as a write-in candidate in the city's office.
The declaration of intent write-in candidate form is available at each city office. The candidate must go to the city office to sign the form and have it notarized.
In a city election, there is no minimum number of votes the candidate must garner in order to be elected. However, in a county election, the write-in candidate must garner five votes to be elected.

Brake for Breakfast raises breast cancer awareness

BLACKFOOT — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Bingham Memorial Hospital was one of several regional hospitals that raised breast cancer awareness through the popular Brake for Breakfast event Wednesday morning.
Brake for Breakfast events raise awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection through regular mammograms and self-exams.
The hospital handed out 2,000 free cooler bags with breakfast along with literature and breast cancer awareness gifts to those who drove by the hospital Wednesday morning.

Heber Glen Bevan, 83

Heber Glen Bevan, 83, a Riverside resident, passed away peacefully in his sleep early Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011 at his home.
We as a family would like to thank the many wonderful people from Blackfoot Home Health and Hospice and Heartworks Connections who helped take care of our great grandfather, grandfather, father and husband in his last years.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 at 11 a.m. in the Riverside LDS 2nd Ward with Bishop Brett Williams conducting.
