ABERDEEN â The Firth Cougar basketball squad entered the Aberdeen Tiger den on Tuesday night, looking for a season sweep of their Bingham County brethren. At the end of a rapidly played contest, that is exactly what they got, as they won the cat fight with a decisive 58-37 victory.

BLACKFOOT â The Shoshone-Bannock Corrections facility now has a library of more than 800 books thanks to a local Boy Scout.
Macalister Loos, 15, is a sophomore at Blackfoot High School and a member of Boy Scout Troop 239. His father, Mark Loos, is a corrections officer at the Shoshone-Bannock Corrections facility and suggested Macalister conduct a book drive to supplement the book selection at the jail, where inmates had fewer than 100 books to choose from.

BLACKFOOT â A local teacher has been named the Idaho VFW Teacher of the Year.
Elaine Asmus, who teaches science at Snake River High School, was presented the award Saturday at the Idaho VFW Mid-Winter Conference in Boise. Asmus was recognized because she encourages her students to participate in a number of activities throughout the year serving veterans and those less fortunate.
She said that even though she teaches science, she still feels a responsibility to encourage her students to be contributing members of their community.
FIRTH â High School history teacher Darvel Jolley started teaching in Firth in 1987.
âI feel like Iâve spent my life doing something that matters,â Jolley said.
Relationships and helping people discover their own self-worth are some of the perks of teaching social studies, Jolley said.
âIn social studies, we get to talk about people; we study groups, nations and/or individuals,â he said.
âFor example, we study Jim Crow laws; under these laws, people were treated in certain ways because they were black,â Jolley said. Â

LOGAN, Utah â Growing up in Bingham County provided Neil Abercrombie with much of the understanding of his new job at Utah State University.
In December USU President Stan Albrecht named Abercrombie as director of government relations.
As such he will help USU garner state and federal funding for key academic programs and research projects.
"A lot of our programs and research have direct relevance to Bingham County," Abercrombie noted in a telephone interview last week. "One of our primary focuses this legislative session is to get funding to start a doctoral veterinary program."
January 14th
THOMAS â The Snake River student body chanted "He's a sophomore," on more than one occasion on Friday evening. They had good reason for the chant as a pair of sophomores put on a shooting clinic for the Panthers with Jacoby Johnson and Cole Rushton leading the way with 18 and 19 points apiece in a 64-56 home victory over Aberdeen.
"I have a lot of younger kids that are playing well and I felt that Cole had a great game tonight," Snake River head coach Bob Coombs said. "He's come a long ways and he just makes us that much better because that's another kid that you will have to guard."
Blaine McInelly, Blackfoot High School Principal, has requested a leave of absence due to health reasons for the remainder of the year at which time he will be retiring, according to a press release from the Blackfoot School District. Ben Speelmon will be working as an educational consultant at Blackfoot High School during McInellyâs absence.

Devon Howell, a most kind and gentle man, passed away on January 8th, 2011 due to complications of Alzheimerâs disease. He was 78 years old. He enjoyed the simple things of life and being with his family and friendsâespecially over a good meal.
Devon was born on May 31, 1932 in Blackfoot, Idaho to Reta Fackrell and Newell Howell. He graduated from Blackfoot High School and Brigham Young University. He enjoyed sports in his youth and as an adult. Devon was in the grocery business all of his life and owned a few businesses of his own.

THOMAS â On a night in which the current crop of Snake River wrestlers paid tribute to the founder of Snake River wrestling, Keith Williams. Snake River capped the evening with a hard fought 43-24 duel win over Bingham County rival Firth on Wednesday night at Snake River High School.
Harlem Eugene âWillyâ Wilson, 76, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, at his home in Arco.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the Anderson Family Funeral Home, 2555 N. Highway 93, Arco with Seth Beal conducting. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and for one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Arco.
