Christmas Tree Fantasy moves to new location

BLACKFOOT — The Bingham County Christmas Tree Fantasy will be back this year — just in a new location.
This year the event, hosted every year the week after Thanksgiving, will be in the Needlecraft Building at the Eastern Idaho State Fairgrounds. The Shilling House Reception Center, where the event has been held for several years, closed last year. It will be the 33rd year for the event.
"We thought (the Needlecraft Building) would be a good place to start," 2011 Christmas Tree Fantasy Chairperson Jana Rupe said.

County commissioners lower speed limit on Pioneer Road

BLACKFOOT — When the speed limits signs get posted, the segment of Pioneer Road from Highway 26 to N. 400 W. will be designated as a 35 miles per hour (mph) zone.
Bingham County commissioners approved that change from 45 to 35 mph on Monday.
"People really do change their driving habits after they receive a speeding ticket," one person testified as he appeared before the county commissioners in support of the speed limit change.

LeRoy Arnold Christensen II, 55

LeRoy Arnold Christensen II, 55, of Blackfoot, passed away Friday, Sept. 23, 2011 at his home following a long illness.
He was raised in the Rose area and attended Blackfoot schools.
He graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1974.
He served an LDS mission to the Arizona Holbrook Mission from 1976-1978.
He attended Ricks College and graduated with a degree in Farm Crops Management in 1980.
He married Diane Marie Esplin on Jan. 31, 1979, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

Fermin Avitia-Garcia, 79

Fermin Avitia-Garcia, 79, of Idaho Falls, passed away Sept. 22, 2011, at his home. He was under the care of Aspen Home Health & Hospice.
Fermin was born April 15, 1932, in Agua Blanca, Mexico, to Remidios Garcia and Isabel Avitia Garcia. He was raised and attended schools there.
On May 6, 1952, he married Gracie Allen Bush in Carson City, Nev. Together they raised five children.
Fermin lived in Truckee, Calif., before moving to Blackfoot and then to Idaho Falls. For 20 years he worked as a railroad foreman for Southern Pacific. He was a restaurant owner for 30 years.

Longtime businessman to close doors this week

BLACKFOOT — When it came time to leave his job in Kansas City for a move back west, Dennis Hansen turned his attention to Blackfoot, Idaho.
"My brother (Larry) had moved here two or three years earlier and liked it," said Hansen, who grew up in Nebraska and Wyoming. "I wanted to go somewhere in the West and back to the mountains."
That was 37 years ago. Hansen and his wife Gloria built a home and a life in Blackfoot.

Former residents fulfill longtime goal

YUMA, Ariz. — Albert and Sharon Gardner, former Blackfoot residents who now live in Arizona, returned to Yuma this week after flying nearly 12,000 miles -- equal to traveling halfway around the world. The trip was the culmination of a longtime desire that Albert had to land his airplane in every contiguous state of the Union. The plane is a home-built craft that he constructed in his garage. Prior to this summer he had landed the plane in every state west of the Mississippi.

Panthers blank Tigers 24-0 on homecoming night

THOMAS — It was a new look Snake River team that took to the home field for Friday nights homecoming clash with Aberdeen as the two headed quarterback rotation was scraped in favor for a more traditional single signal caller and the change was effective as the Panthers sent their large crowd away happy with a 24-0 whitewashing of the Tigers.

Late score lifts Broncos to homecoming win

BLACKFOOT — Colby Pearson hauled in a six yard touchdown strike from Trae Pilster with :30 remaining on the clock on Friday evening and the Blackfoot Broncos emerged victorious in their homecoming game with a 27-22 victory over the Madison Bobcats.
The touchdown was quickly followed by a catch by Gabby Maldonado who scored the two point conversion, making the final score 29-22.
The Bronco’s hosted the Bobcats in what was not only Blackfoot’s homecoming game it was also the continuation of the annual Buck Bowl, as brothers Stan and Mitch’s teams faced off.

Chamber seeks nominations for Board

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations of Chamber members to fill three seats on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
The terms of three members on the board will expire at the end of this year. Nominations from the general membership of the Chamber of Commerce to fill these three seats will be accepted until Oct. 14. Nominations can be made by calling the Chamber at 785-0510, emailing chamber@blackfootchamber.org or by mail at PO Box 801, Blackfoot, ID 83221.
