January 10, 2011

Norman Davis Harris, 86, of Idaho Falls, passed away Friday, January 7, 2011 at the Monticello in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
He was born September 21, 1924 in Pocatello, Idaho to Orville W. and HazelDavis Harris. He attended schools in Pocatello and graduated from Pocatello High School. After serving in the Army in France and Germany during World War II he settled in Moreland.

It’s Sweet to be home

BLACKFOOT — The Sea Dog and his bride are back home from Mexico. Again. But this time they intend to stay.
Dwain and Pauline Sweet of Blackfoot have been spending part of each year in the tiny fishing village of Kino Bay, Mexico, since 1989.
Because of advancing age and the fact their children want them home, the Sweets sold their park model trailer and their boat and are determined to stay close to the hometown they have claimed since 1964.
“When we went down last year, we had an idea this was going to be our last trip,” Dwain said as he and Pauline sat in their dining room last week.

Lady Panthers hold off hard charging Lady Broncos

BLACKFOOT — The Snake River Lady Panthers built a double-digit first half lead and then held off a late charge by the Blackfoot Lady Broncos too complete the season sweep of the cross river rivals with a 47-43 victory on Saturday evening.
"I think that this win means a lot to the girls and certainly to the fans," Snake River head coach Steven Morton said. "For us, this was an important game but not nearly as important as our five remaining league games. It was a fun game that helps us be competitive in our league."

Lady Panthers win cat fight in Firth

January 8, 2011

FIRTH - The Firth Lady Cougars welcomed Snake River to town on Friday night and nearly upset the taller, more experienced Lady Panthers. Trailing by only three points entering the final quarter, the Lady Cougars finally ran out of gas and Snake River was able to pull away to a 35-23 win in a contest much closer than the final score would indicate.
"I am so proud of the way the girls played tonight," said Coach Sharla Cook. "We had a tough road trip last night and I know the girls were exhausted, but they dug down deep tonight and played their hearts out."

Broncos get big win in the Snake Pit!

POCATELLO — Blackfoot got down by as many as 9-points during Friday evenings road contest at Century High School but in the end found a way to fight through a physical affair for a 39-37 victory.
"This is a different district and it's a more physical district than we are used too," Blackfoot coach Mike Anderson said. "We came into it thinking in our heads that it is going to be a physical game but until your actually in it, you can't understand it."

Picketers protest windmill decision

BLACKFOOT — About 50 people in opposition to windmills picketed the Bingham County Courthouse Friday afternoon.
Spokesman Kirk Jolley said, "Our property rights are not being protected; our county commissioners are not listening to us.
"Windmills are destroying our economy," Jolley said. "One of the reasons power rates are going up is because of the cost power companies must pay for energy produced by windmills or other alternative energy sources."

William Moss, 54

William Moss, 54, of Fort Hall, passed away Thursday, January 6, 2011 at the Bingham Memorial Skilled Nursing and Rehab.
Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home and will be announced.

Students donate books to PMC

BLACKFOOT — Students at Stoddard and Stalker Elementary schools donated more than 800 books that will be given to the pediatric floor at Portneuf Medical Center in memory of a child that died last year.
David and Amy Saville, who’s son Gabriel Grant Saville died last year, began the book drive last year as a way to honor the memory of their son.
The books will be donated to the hospital from the Saville’s on what would be Gabe’s second birthday—Jan. 26.
When VISTA representatives Annie Tanner and Jaimie Trevino heard about the drive, they contacted the family and offered to coordinate.

Panthers pounce on Redskins

January 7, 2011

THOMAS — A pair of highly touted 3Å wrestling programs squared off on the mats Thursday evening as the Snake River Panthers hosted the Teton Redskins for a non-conference duel at Snake River High School.
At the end of a hotly contested match, the Panthers emerged victorious with a 45-30 team score as the Panthers won 8 of the 14 matches, 4 of those by pin.

Lady Russets get thrilling win over Skyline

January 7, 2011

SHELLEY - In a contest that was as exciting as it was entertaining, the Shelley Lady Russets toppled the Skyline Lady Grizzlies 69-65 in overtime.
Sadee Wattenbarger nailed a banked in three pointer with 13.7 seconds remaining in regulation to knot the score at 57 and tipped a pass away on defense to send the game into the extra stanza.
"Sadee played huge tonight," said Coach Burke Davis. "She is our tallest post player and is always out sized, but never out hustled or out played. She gives us her best every night."
