George Robert Ney, 79

February 14, 2011

George Robert Ney, a 79-year-old Rose area resident, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at his home following an illness.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, at the Rose LDS Church, 403 N. 150 W. under the direction of the Hawker Funeral Home. The family will meet with friends at the church on Wednesday for an hour prior to services.
Interment will be in the Riverside-Thomas Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Stewart Hoover Post #23 of the American Legion.

ISU professor's voice no longer a solo

BLACKFOOT – Blackfoot High School (BHS) Spanish teacher Paula Maldonado loves her job.
“I say it’s the best job in the world,” Maldonado said.

“Not one day’s the same,” she said. “There are a lot of eager students who want to learn Spanish and work hard.”
Maldonado has been teaching 13 years. The first three years, she was taught English as a Second Language (ESL) in the Blackfoot Sixth Grade School and Mountain View Middle School. For the past decade, she has taught straight Spanish classes to Blackfoot High School students.

Dive team prepares for ice rescue

ABERDEEN — Members of the Bingham and Power County Search and Rescue dive teams spent their Saturday morning diving below the ice in the freezing American Falls Reservoir.
The divers were completing their winter training, preparing for a scenario in which someone falls through the ice and into the water, potentially becoming trapped under the ice.
On Saturday, the ice in the Big Hole area of the American Falls Reservoir near Sportsmen's Park was nearly two feet thick. The water temperature was less than 30 degrees.

Duo writes, illustrates children's books

ABERDEEN — A stay at home mom and a retired school teacher have partnered to write and illustrate children's books.
Author Julie Beck is a stay at home mom with six children. She has read countless children's books to her kids, and about 10 years ago she said she began writing her own stories. But it wasn't until a few years ago that she found someone to illustrate her stories, making her dream of writing children's books a reality.

Broncos fall on Senior Night

BLACKFOOT — Blackfoot paid a fond farewell to 7 seniors at Blackfoot High School on Friday night as Beau Hoskins, Cody Cunningham, Logan Loveland, Collin Rockwood, Phil Woods, Will Woods and Sam Cannon laced them up for the final time on the home hardwood.
Unfortunately for those seniors and the large contingent of fans on hand to cheer them on, Century was able to turn in a solid performance in the roll of spoiler, sending the home team packing with a 69-50 victory.

Cougars roll over Bulldogs

FIRTH - The Firth Cougars celebrated senior night Friday evening with a total dismantling of the Ririe Bulldogs, sending the visitors home on the wrong end of a 59-23 score.
With seniors Kory Anderson, Logan Wynn and Morgan Giles leading the way, the Cougars sped to an early 16-9 lead in the first period and the contest was never in doubt from that point.

4 musicians make all-Northwest band

BLACKFOOT — Four students from Blackfoot High School (BHS) qualified to participate in the National Association of Music Education (MENC) All-Northwest Conference Feb. 16-20 in Bellevue, Wash.
About 1,000 outstanding high school musicians from the six Northwest states (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming) will participate in the All-Northwest Band, Orchestra, Treble Choir, Mixed Choir, Jazz Band and/or Jazz Choir.
To be selected, each student was recorded online performing college level pieces. Screeners selected the students who will participate.

Lady Panthers extend season with win over Bear Lake

POCATELLO — The dream of a state tournament bid remained alive on Thursday evening as the Snake River Lady Panthers took care of business with a 45-35 win over Bear Lake at Highland High School.
Bear Lake held their only lead of the game at 2-0 before Snake River reeled off 10 straight points, 6 of those courtesy of Shayla Christensen, who drained a pair of three balls in the first quarter to put the Lady Panthers up for good on the evening.

Peter Clark Ward, 36

Peter Clark Ward, 36, of Blackfoot was peacefully reunited with his mom and loved ones on Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at his home following a brief and sudden illness.
Peter was born May 23, 1974, in Pocatello to Daroll R. Ward and Bonnie K. Dimos. He attended school in the Blackfoot School District, graduating from Blackfoot High School in 1992. Other than living in Salt Lake City for a short time, he spent his lifetime in Blackfoot.
Peter worked at various construction jobs. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling and spending time with friends.
