Babcock claims title of Blackfoot's Distinguished Young Woman

BLACKFOOT — Kyra Babcock won the title of Blackfoot's 2011-2012 Distinguished Young Woman over a field of 16 other beautiful and gifted competitors Saturday night at the Blackfoot Performing Arts Center.
The 17 Blackfoot High School juniors competed in the areas of scholastics, interview, talent, fitness and self-expression. Each category was judged with the following criteria:
· Scholastic-20 percent
· Interview-25 percent
· Talent-25 percent
· Fitness-15 percent
· Self-expression-15 percent

Snake River opens season with 9-2 win over Teton

THOMAS — The season opener for the Snake River baseball team went about as good as one could have expected on Friday afternoon.
Squaring off with 6th district Teton, the Panthers got solid pitching, even better defense and more than enough hits in a 9-2 win.
"First time out I think that we played good and really it was just good to get out on the field," Snake River head coach James Carter said. "We had some kids make some great defensive plays. Cody Dean made some great plays at third and all in all it was a great way to start."

Danny Leroy Dahlquist, 58

Danny Leroy Dahlquist, 58, of Blackfoot passed away Sunday, March 13, 2011, at his home.
Survivors include his wife Cherryl Camphouse Dahlquist of Blackfoot; a son, Johntahon Dahlquist of Missoula, Mont.; a brother, David Dahlquist of Boise; a sister, Lila Johnson of Ririe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dave and Fern Dahlquist; and one brother, Richard.
We would like to thank everyone for their prayers on Danny’s passing.
Services were conducted on March 15, 2011, in the Grove City Cemetery.

Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Louise Lewis, 80

Elizabeth “Betty” Louise Lewis, 80, of Pocatello, passed away on March 12, 2011, at the Ashley Manor in Chubbuck.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2011, at the Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling in Blackfoot.
The family will meet with friends on Friday at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. and again on Saturday for an hour prior to services.
Interment will be in the Riverside Thomas Cemetery.

Don Taylor McCandless, 83

March 18, 2011

Don was born at Lewisville to Joseph H. and Donna Taylor McCandless, and joined three brothers, Lyman, Ray and Truman. Don graduated from Midway High School in 1945 and entered the Coast Guard for a short time and then the Maritime Service. He was in the 8th Army during the occupation of Japan and the 6th Army during the Korean Conflict.

Shelley board approves purchase of new bus

SHELLEY – Buses and bus safety were the main topics of discussion at the Shelley Joint School District school board meeting Thursday evening.
Shelley trustees approved the purchase of an International 77-passenger conventional school bus for $81,144.
School districts have 60 days to “piggy-back” on another school district’s bus bid, said transportation supervisor Ron Searle.
“I like to order the same bus as Bonneville because they order more buses than we do,” Searle said. “The bus is already built and will be delivered about mid-July.”

Reserve sheriff's deputies volunteer to serve

BLACKFOOT — They wear the same uniform, receive the same training and are as qualified as any Bingham County deputy sheriff—only they are volunteers.
There are eight volunteer deputies in the Bingham County Sheriff Reserve Deputy Program. The program was originally started as a way to help fill vacancies within the department with qualified deputies. The reserve deputies also provide support to full-time deputies by covering high school sporting events, providing extra patrols during the Eastern Idaho State Fair and whenever additional deputies are needed.

Bronco tennis opens season

POCATELLO — It was a pretty good opening day on the tennis courts for the Blackfoot tennis team as they tangled with a pair of state title contenders at Century High School for the season opener.
The Blackfoot boys turned in fine opening performance, winning their duel with Century 4-3 before falling 3-4 to Wood River in the night cap.
The girls fell in the team total in both of their matches, 2-5 to Century and 3-4 to Wood River.

Another plea agreement reached in BHS case

BLACKFOOT — Another plea agreement has been reached between the Bingham County Prosecutors Office and one of five former Blackfoot High School athletes facing various misdemeanor charges.
Logan Chidester pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of misdemeanor disturbing the peace. Chidester was scheduled to begin trial next week on six charges of false imprisonment and two charges of battery, all misdemeanors.
The plea agreement is the same as the one accepted by Nathan Walker last week. Both are scheduled to be sentenced March 25.

City council discusses emergency access

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot City Council began discussions Tuesday night regarding a secure building access system for emergency services.
