GLENNS FERRY — Steven Mark Butler, 53, of Blackfoot passed away Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010 at the home of his brother David in Glenns Ferry.
Steve was born Feb. 17, 1957, in Blackfoot to LaMar and Sharlene Butler. He was raised in Blackfoot and attended school in the Blackfoot School District.
Steve worked as a body fender restorer, at numerous dairies in various areas and as a sheep herder in Oakley. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and restoring old cars.

Lawyer halts P&Z meeting

BLACKFOOT — Attorney Jim Dalton, representing Natural Guardian Limited Partnership, challenged the legality of the rescheduled meeting of the Bingham County Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission on Wednesday.
Frank VanderSloot, the president of Melaleuca, and his family are the principals in Natural Guardian Limited Partnership.
Originally, the P&Z meeting was scheduled on Wednesday, Sept. 22. Because of a fire in downtown Blackfoot, power was cut to all buildings, including the courthouse. The meeting was then rescheduled to Wednesday, Sept. 29.

BURA budget hearing set

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Urban Renewal Agency will host a public hearing Tuesday for consideration of its proposed $2.3 million budget. The meeting will be at 7 a.m. at City Hall in Blackfoot.

Late goal earns Panthers 2-2 tie with Eagles

THOMAS — The Snake River boys soccer team entered Wednesday's conference tilt with Marsh Valley looking for their first conference win of the season.
After 80 minutes of back and forth action, Snake River settled for a 2-2 tie with the Eagles, running their conference record to 0-2-2.
"We played a good game and we felt that we played a much stronger game than the other team so we feel that we should have won it," Snake River head coach Trevor Peterson said. "We did really well but I wish that the score was a little higher."

Argh! Pirates make Cougars walk the plank

FIRTH — Sometimes it's hard to imagine the future when the present is so difficult. On Wednesday evening the Firth volleyball team suffered a 3 set loss to West Side but in the end steady improvement of the predominantly underclassmen laden roster still shined through.
"I really think that these girls will be a force," Firth head coach Carla Reeves said. "They are so young but for the next couple of years they will be dominant but it is hard for the seniors this year."

Lady Panthers prevail 1-0 over Lady Eagles

THOMAS — Two weeks ago the Snake River Lady Panther soccer squad traveled too Arimo for a huge conference tilt on the pitch, emerging with a 1-0 victory. On Wednesday afternoon the Lady Eagles came calling looking too even the season series but came up short as Snake River once again prevailed by that same 1-0 score.
"We had the luckiest outcome that we could have had today," Snake River head coach Randy Turpin said. "Marsh Valley outplayed us today and could have won this game 4-1."

Students learn about potatoes

BLACKFOOT — Farmers brought potato products to the Irving Kindergarten Center in Blackfoot Tuesday.
"We're doing this because it's important to this community," said Irving Kindergarten principal J Thayne. "Students get to see where potatoes really come from.
"In the past, we would get students out into the fields but because of budget cuts, there are no field trips," Thayne said.
The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) organized "Spud Day."
Students learned how potatoes are raised.
"Potatoes need soil dirt, rain and sun," said kindergartner Karson Lindsay.

Broncos start fast and finish strong

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Bronco soccer team took to the pitch on Tuesday afternoon for their last home conference tussle of the season as they welcomed the Hillcrest Knights to town for a critical game as far as district tournament seeding is concerned.
Blackfoot erupted from the gate, taking control of the game from the opening kick as Gera Bartolo found Walter Lopez for the games opening score just 5 minutes into the match.

Patricia Ellen Guertin, 58

ARCO — Patricia Ellen Guertin, 58, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010 at the Lost Rivers Medical Center in Arco.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at noon at the Anderson Family Funeral Home, 2555 N. Highway 93, Arco, with Bishop Todd Perkes officiating.

Darrel Saxton

MESQUITE, Nev. — Darrel John Saxton passed away Sept. 25, 2010 in Beaver Dam, Ariz., after an extended illness.
He married Dora Pyper on Dec. 15, 1962. He went to work for UPFE in Pocatello in November of 1966 and retired in November of 2001. Darrel loved to hunt, fish, go four-wheeling and being outdoors. His grandchildren were the light of his life.
