Lady Russets take down Lady Cougars 59-38

December 3, 2014

SHELLEY — Last season the Firth Lady Cougars were able to sweep both meetings from the their neighbors five miles to the north in Shelley.
Tuesday night the two teams met for the first time in 2014 with the visiting Lady Cougars carrying a 5-0 record and the Russets and first year head coach Trevor Elordi improving every day and looking to get their a win against their county rival.
Employing a full court pressure defense and double teaming Firth post Bailey Nelson stalled out the Cougars offense as Shelley was able to run away with a 59-38 win at Shelley High School.

November 30, 2014

FIRTH — It is not often a team go over nine minutes without scoring a basket and still earn a double-digit win, but the Firth Lady Cougars did both on Saturday night with a 46-29 win over Malad at Firth High School.
The Lady Cougars scored a field goal with 4:30 left in the third quarter to build a 32-16 lead. But it would be over nine minutes of game play before Natalie Jolley's layup came with 1:46 left in the game.
During the nine minute stretch the Cougars did manage to convert nine free throws, but the Dragons were never able to cut into the big lead.

All-Bingham County boyss soccer team

November 26, 2014

BLACKFOOT — In yesterday's edition of the Morning News the girls soccer All-Bingham County team was released featuring the 11 best players in the county in my opinion this season.
Today I get to announce the All-Bingham County boys soccer team.
Just like the girls team the all-county team was picked by myself based on the performances I saw during the season.
And while not everyone can be chosen for the team, the picks are in no way made to diminish or not acknowledge any players performance during the year.
With that announcement out of the way on to the team.

And just like last season the players are picked by myself and are based on the performances by the individuals during the season.
We will begin with girls soccer where the Shelley Russets were the only team that qualified for the state tournament and featured a high powered offensive attack.

Key free throws give Lady Panthers win over Filer

November 26, 2014

THOMAS — It has been a week since the Snake River Lady Panthers last took to the basketball floor.
In that time the team hasn't had a lot of practice as head coach Rich Dunn was helping the coach the Panthers football team to the 3A state title last Friday.
Despite that the Panthers took to the floor Tuesday against Filer.
It wasn't the prettiest of games but the Panthers earned a hard fought win going 13-of-14 in the final 3:35 to earn a 44-35 victory.

Tigers come up short in 2A title game

November 25, 2014

POCATELLO — It had been 36 years since the Aberdeen Tigers last played for a state football championship.
And coming into Monday's 2A state title game in Holt Arena the Tigers were confident they would get a little redemption over West Side for the defeat earlier in the season.
But the Pirates controlled the opening half of play scoring a pair of second quarter touchdowns to earn a 16-6 win and the 2A state championship Monday night in Holt Arena.

Bishop Kelly breaks Blackfoot’s hearts

November 22, 2014

POCATELLO – There are certain things you can’t do in a championship game.
Turning the ball over, committing penalties and failing to capitalize on opportunities are some of the big ones, and mistakes the Blackfoot Broncos rarely made this season.
But in Friday night’s 4A state championship game against Bishop Kelly the Broncos made uncharacteristic mistakes all night long and, in the end a pair of big plays in the final minutes by the Knights handed the Broncos a 14-10 loss and gave Bishop Kelly its second consecutive 4A state championship.
