March 4, 2013

NAMPA – The game could have been played on any given night in Bingham County but on Saturday afternoon it was the state’s biggest stage as the Snake River Panthers and the Shelley Russets squared off on the Idaho Center hardwood with each looking to bring home the coveted 3A state boys basketball championship.
It took five quarters of basketball but in the end it was Snake River who finally stood at center court to hoist the blue trophy after their 67-65 overtime thriller.

Panthers advance to 3A state title game

March 2, 2013

MERIDIAN – Last year the Snake River Panthers fell to the Fruitland Grizzlies in the Idaho Center, settling for the second place trophy. This season, Snake River knocked out the Fruitland squad, advancing to today’s 3A state title game with a well played 50-37 victory over the Grizzlies.
“Our game plan was to come out and control the tempo because Fruitland likes to come out and get up and down the floor at nine hundred miles per hour,” Snake River head coach Robert Coombs said. “I thought that our zone was able to slow the tempo down and get the game to our liking.”

Russets tame Wildcats 66-52

MERIDIAN – The Shelley Russets slowed down a very quick Filer Wildcat team and then got a game high 19 points from sophomore sharpshooter Tyler Fredrickson as they advanced to today’s 3A state title game with a convincing 66-52 victory on Friday evening.
“I’m so proud of my kids,” Shelley head coach Dave Hadley said. “All day long and deservedly so, all we heard was how good Filer was. Our kids are battlers, they’re gamers and they came out and didn’t play afraid. They came out and played bold which is what we talked about in the locker room and tonight we just went out and played and I’m so happy for them.”

Russets run past Pirates 60-44

March 1, 2013

MERIDIAN – Three different Russets cracked double-digit scoring as Shelley cruised into the 3A semi finals with a 60-44 win over Payette on Thursday evening.
Playing the last of the four opening round games the Russets took note of the earlier upset of conference rival Sugar-Salem as they came out quick on the Pirates, leading to a 15-9 first quarter lead.
“It was hard to push it as much as we wanted to against their zone with them getting back we didn’t get quite as many easy looks as I would have liked to have gotten,” Shelley head coach Dave Hadley said. “First game of the state tournament for all of these kids except for McKay, McKay got some time as a freshman, and for the first time on a pretty big stage you have to expect some nerves. Overall execution wasn’t great but we got a win and I guess that’s what matters now.”

February 23, 2013

POCATELLO — Bingham County wrestlers had 15 chances at individual state titles entering Saturday's portion of the 2013 State Wrestling Championships. By days end, three stood above the rest as Treyton Nilsson, Jacob Frost and Luke Madsen each won state titles in their respective weight classes.
Nilsson started the finals action off with a bang as he took on Bubba Boots of South Fremont in a rematch of the Tiger-Grizz final a little more than a month previous.
At the Tiger-Grizz Nilsson built a big lead only to fall late in the third round. On Saturday, Nilsson reversed that with a thrilling 4-2 win.
"I was trying not to go as hard as I possibly could in the first round this time, instead I was trying to even it out because I'm not too good on my stamina," Nilsson said. "It was great, you can't really describe the feeling of winning."

Cougars capture seventh straight conference title

February 21, 2013

ST. ANTHONY — For the eighth time in nine seasons and the seventh time in a row, the Firth Cougars cut down the nets on a 2A Nuclear Conference Tournament Championship as they demolished runner up Salmon 70-41 on Wednesday night to claim the blue trophy and the automatic state tournament bid.
"I think that the biggest pressure that you face is in the district tournament," Coach Adams said. "Then you go to state and it's like you know what whatever happens happens. It's anybody's game and what you did at districts doesn't matter. It's who's playing the best and who wants it more. We are going to go over there and do the best that we can and try to bring home another trophy."
