Cougars win Bingham County cat fight with Tigers

January 16, 2013

ABERDEEN — It was a 2A Bingham County cat fight on Tuesday evening as the Firth Cougars traveled to Aberdeen for a tussle with the Tigers on the hardwood.
Aberdeen led by as many as 17 points in the contest but Firth showed their collective metal as they overcame the deficit for a 52-50 road win.
"Obviously we didn't start out as well as we would have liked," Firth head coach Scott Adams said. "We were prepared we just didn't come out ready but hand it to Aberdeen, they came out and shot lights out and played well. I'm just proud of my kids and the way that they were able to overcome tonight."

THOMAS — Jacoby Johnson dropped 18 points and the Snake River Panthers led from start to finish in a 68-50 non-conference home victory over South Fremont on Friday evening.
The Panthers got off to a solid start as Brad Coombs dialed long distance for the games first basket and that trey ignited a 12-2 run to open the first quarter and from there, the Panthers never looked back.
"The kids played pretty good, especially early in the game," Snake River head coach Bob Coombs said. "I thought that we did a pretty good job against their triangle offense by getting into the passing lanes and creating turnovers."

Blackfoot grapplers thrill home crowd with 51-31 victory

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Bronco wrestling team made their home debut on Wednesday evening as they hosted Preston for a conference battle on the mats. Wrestling short handed with a handful of wrestlers out with injuries the Broncos showcased their overall depth as they took home the team win with a 51-31 final.
"It's been awhile since we have been home so it was good to get it rolling in front of our home crowd with all of the alumni, family and friends watching," Blackfoot head coach Thain Cashmore said. "We had a lot of young kids go out for us today and they stepped it up. Even though some of their matches might not of ended the way that they wanted it to, I thought that they showed a lot of heart and determination tonight. The core of our team did what they are supposed to do and they led us tonight."

Lady Panthers clip Lady Eagles 49-46

THOMAS — 3A powerhouses collided on the hardwood at Snake River High School on Wednesday evening as the top two ranked 3A teams in the state locked horns for the first of what will be several showdowns this season.
Last year, the two teams were as close as they could be as Marsh Valley dropped Snake River on three different occasions by a grand total of five points. Wednesday, Snake River got over the proverbial hump as they erased those memories with a hard fought, physical 49-46 victory.
"Marsh Valley and Snake River. Neither one of us are going away after this one game but it was nice to get a win against them," Snake River head coach Rich Dunn said. "I don't think that they shot the ball as well as they have or can tonight so when we go to their place we will need to tighten it up even more."

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Broncos dug themselves a hole to begin their conference tilt against Rigby on Tuesday evening, falling behind by a 19-3 score after one quarter of play. BLACKFOOT — The darn ball just wouldn't go through the hole. Fresh off their heartbreaking road overtime loss at Madison, the Blackfoot Broncos faced off with another 5A school on Friday night and trailing by three points with thirty seconds left in the contest the Broncos got not one, not two, but five different shots at tying the ball game. Unfortunately for the Blackfoot fans on each and everyone of those attempts, the ball just would not cooperate as the Broncos fell to Skyline 51-48.
"You can't fault the looks we got," Blackfoot head coach Dan Hale said. "We had the ball in the hands of our shooters. We couldn't have asked for a whole lot more."

January 3, 2013

SHELLEY — The Shelley Russets were trailing at home to the 5A Idaho Falls Tigers on Wednesday evening, that was until a three ball from Chad Leckington gave the Russets a lead that they never relinquished. Of course, that deficit was 2-0 and the Leckington trey came less than a minute into the non-conference affair but in the end, that was the last of the excitement of a close game as the Russets throttled the Tigers 64-34.
