Bingham County brings home three individual state titles

POCATELLO — Bingham County wrestlers had 15 chances at individual state titles entering Saturday's portion of the 2013 State Wrestling Championships. By days end, three stood above the rest as Treyton Nilsson, Jacob Frost and Luke Madsen each won state titles in their respective weight classes.
Nilsson started the finals action off with a bang as he took on Bubba Boots of South Fremont in a rematch of the Tiger-Grizz final a little more than a month previous.
At the Tiger-Grizz Nilsson built a big lead only to fall late in the third round. On Saturday, Nilsson reversed that with a thrilling 4-2 win.
"I was trying not to go as hard as I possibly could in the first round this time, instead I was trying to even it out because I'm not too good on my stamina," Nilsson said. "It was great, you can't really describe the feeling of winning."

2013 State Wrestling Championships

POCATELLO — The states finest wrestlers descend upon Idaho State University's Holt Arena on Friday with each of them dreaming of glory and an individual state championship as they began the two day tournament.
Amid them were Bingham Counties best as Blackfoot, Snake River, Shelley, Firth and Aberdeen each sent a contingent into the fray. At days end, Bingham County had represented themselves quite well thank you as the five schools combined to send fifteen wrestlers into today's semifinals and in so doing, assuring themselves no worse than sixth place medals for their efforts.

Cougars capture seventh straight conference title

ST. ANTHONY — For the eighth time in nine seasons and the seventh time in a row, the Firth Cougars cut down the nets on a 2A Nuclear Conference Tournament Championship as they demolished runner up Salmon 70-41 on Wednesday night to claim the blue trophy and the automatic state tournament bid.
"I think that the biggest pressure that you face is in the district tournament," Coach Adams said. "Then you go to state and it's like you know what whatever happens happens. It's anybody's game and what you did at districts doesn't matter. It's who's playing the best and who wants it more. We are going to go over there and do the best that we can and try to bring home another trophy."

Panthers lock down conference crown

POCATELLO — A 3A fifth district championship was on the line on Tuesday evening as the top seeded Snake River Panthers looked to close out the Bear Lake Bears for the tournament title and the bid into the big dance in Boise next weekend.
By nights end Snake River had accomplished that goal as they built a double-digit lead and then cruised home with a 51-37 victory thereby avoiding the dreaded play in game.

Russets capture conference title

IDAHO FALLS — The Shelley Russets were in the drivers seat as they entered Monday nights 3A Mountain Rivers championship game against Sugar-Salem. As it was, Shelley enjoyed the fact that they were unblemished in the double-elimination tournament so a loss on Monday would not eliminate their conference title dreams as the dreaded if needed game loomed on Wednesday evening.
Shelley decided to avoid that route however as they broke open a 32-32 third quarter tie with a dazzling 17 point fourth quarter to capture the district title with a 49-41 victory.

State Champions!

NAMPA — For the past several seasons the Snake River Lady Panthers have been knocking on the door. On Saturday, the Lady Panthers kicked that door in and then sprinted their way to the first girls state basketball championship in program history as they downed the Filer Wildcats 51-34 at the Idaho Center in Nampa.
"It's the first time that a Snake River Panther girls basketball team has been in a state championship game and the kids responded real well," Snake River head coach Rich Dunn said. "The funny thing about it is that our first two games over here this weekend were probably the worst that we've played in the four years that we've been here. It just so happens that this year we were able to get ourselves into the championship game and I thought that tonight was the first night that we played good basketball. It's good to get over that hump. You have to get there to be that program and we want to be that program."

Cougars nip Huskies 47-46

ST. ANTHONY — The was a huge sigh of relief coming from the Firth side of the court on Friday evening as they held off a valiant effort from the North Fremont Huskies, advancing to the 2A Nuclear Conference championship game with a breath taking 47-46 victory.

Panthers capture district wrestling title

ARIMO — The Snake River Panthers dominated the 3A district five championships at Marsh Valley on Thursday, defending their district title from a season previous with 259 team points to outdistance second place American Falls for the team title.
"This was probably the best showing that any of my teams have ever had at the district tournament since I've been coaching," Snake River head coach Jeff Gardner said.
