Lady Indians blank Lady Broncos to close out regular season

BLACKFOOT — It was the close of the 2012 regular soccer season for the Blackfoot Lady Broncos on Tuesday evening and for a trio of seniors, Alexsys Ramirez, Diana Hernandez and Sharon Varela, it was the final home game for them as well.
Unfortunately, on a day in which the wind was howling, the Lady Broncos were unable to muster the offense necessary to win as they fell 3-0 to conference foe Preston.

ISU's Hill receives national honor

Idaho State senior tight end Josh Hill has been named the National Tight End of the Week by College Football Performance Awards for his performance on Saturday against Sacramento State.

Hill, a Blackfoot High School graduate, had a career afternoon as he caught 12 passes for 123 yards against the Hornets. His previous career high was nine catches against Portland State last year and 92 yards receiving against Western State in the 2011 home opener. For the season Hill has 25 catches for 242 yards and two touchdowns.

Broncos force 5 turnovers in 45-21 win over Bees

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot defense forced 5 Bonneville turnovers and the dynamic duo of Alonzo Ramos and Colby Pearson accounted for four Bronco scores as the Blackfoot Broncos remained unbeaten on the season with a 45-21 win over the Bees.
"We knew that we would have to come out and score some points because Bonneville has some explosive kids," Blackfoot head coach Stan Buck said. "Our defense got off to a fantastic start and when your being aggressive and flying to the ball you can create turnovers. Our philosophy was to bend but not break and that's what we did tonight."

Panthers skin Bears 3-1

THOMAS — One consistent highlight of the 3A fifth district volleyball season has been the long time rivalry between Bear Lake and Snake River. Those two teams resumed that rivalry on Thursday evening at Snake River High School and when the dust had settled, it was the two time defending state champion Panthers who stood victorious as they downed Bear Lake in four games 25-5, 25-17, 18-25 and 25-16.

Bronco comeback falls short

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Bronco volleyball squad took to the court on Wednesday night looking to take down the visiting Pocatello Indians in a conference tussle on the hard wood. Unfortunately for the Broncos and a nice crowd in attendance, the home standing Broncos came up just short of a comeback attempt as they fell in five games 15-25, 18-25, 25-23, 27-25 and 4-15.

Snake River fares well at major cross country meet

MORNING NEWS
EAGLE — James Withers, the defending Class 3A state champion from Snake River, placed 17th in the elite division of the Bob Firman Invitational cross country meet on Saturday.
Whittier's time over the 5-kilometer course at Eagle Island State Park was 16 minutes 5 seconds.
The meet drew 140 teams from throughout the West including Utah, Oregon, Washington and, of course, Idaho.
"We were very honored to have been invited to participate in it," said Panther coach Mike Kirkham.

Panthers complete season sweep of Russets

THOMAS — County foes collided for the second straight Saturday as the Shelley Russets and the Snake River Panthers butted heads on the soccer pitch. Snake River came into the contest looking for the season sweep of the Russets and after a three goal first half that is exactly what they got for their efforts as they shut out the visiting Russets 3-0.
"We were a little tired but everyone came out and played really hard today," Snake River head coach Trevor Peterson said. "I thought that we came out and made good passes, had some good runs, moved the ball well and finished the game hard."

Lady Russets dump Lady Panthers 3-1

THOMAS — A week removed from a nil-nil tie at Shelley High School, the Snake River Lady Panthers and the Shelley Lady Russets resumed their county rivalry on Saturday as they returned to the pitch looking for a definitive winner.
At the end of the day it was the visiting Shelley squad who stood triumphant as the final whistle blew as they celebrated a solid 3-1 victory.
