Firth defeats district rival Ririe for 2A state title

February 22, 2014

NAMPA — Take away Firth's 25 free throws, and Ririe would have walked away victorious. Shooting from the stripe was the difference between leaving state champion or settling for runner-up, and Firth delivered when it mattered.

The Cougars hit 64 percent of their attempts to secure their Class 2A state championship in Saturday's 45-36 victory over the Bulldogs at the Idaho Center. Firth recognized the importance of free throw shooting after narrowly escaping the opening round of tournament play with a victory.

February 22, 2014

KUNA — The Firth and Ririe girls basketball programs are all too familiar with each other, playing each other four times this season with a 2-2 result. Today at the Idaho Center in Nampa, the tiebreaker doesn't get any bigger: the Cougars and Bulldogs meet for the Class 2A state championship.

Both Firth and Ririe won in Friday's championship semifinal games, with the Cougars dominating another group of Bulldogs, the ones from Melba, in a 57-35 rout that seemed to be decided halfway through the first quarter.

Firth, Jensen hang on to edge New Plymouth, 44-43

February 21, 2014

KUNA -- Kayla Jensen relished her assignment in the waning moments of the Firth Cougars' opening round game of the Class 2A girls state tournament: hug the ball and don't move.

Jensen snatched a loose ball in the final three seconds and held on to help Firth preserve a 44-43 victory over New Plymouth.

Nine Cougar grapplers headed to state

February 20, 2014

FIRTH — When Firth junior Jackson Thompson won his opening match of the 2A District Six wrestling tournament Wednesday afternoon he had no idea how long his day would end up being.
A two-point takedown with five seconds left in the third period sent the match into overtime. A reversal in the overtime gave Thompson the win over West Jefferson's Blade Albertson.
But the fatigue and stalling to catch his breath Thompson felt in the opening match would get even more intense in his second match as a berth in the 170 pound championship match hung in the balance.
After jumping out to an early lead against Salmon's Garrett Jarnigan, Thompson went in for a takedown in the final seconds of the match to steal the win, instead Jarnigan reversed Thompson and earned a tough 6-4 win.
Undeterred, Thompson wrestled his way all the way through the consolation bracket to earn a third place finish and a berth in next week's state wrestling tournament.
Thompson was the first of nine Cougars who punchers their tickets to the state tournament.

February 19, 2014

But despite the trials and tribulations of the season the Panthers again won the 3A District 5 championship last week and will be returning to this week's 3A state basketball tournament to defend their title.
