Broncos send bakers dozen to state, capture 4 district titles

IONA — The Blackfoot Broncos took to the Bonneville mats on Wednesday looking to run their district championship streak to fifteen. Unfortunately the men in black came up short of that team goal as Bonneville captured the team title with 519.5 points while Blackfoot came home with the second place hardware with 409.5 points. Pocatello rounded out the top three with 293 points.
“It was a big day for our kids,” Blackfoot head coach Thain Cashmore said. “They had to go out, put their toes on the line and prove themselves one more time.”

Panthers open conference tournament with win over Beavers

POCATELLO — The Snake River Panthers opened defense of their conference championship on Wednesday evening as the top seeded squad squared off with the American Falls Beavers at Pocatello High School.
The game started in nightmarish fashion for the Panthers as they struggled from the field and the free throw line in the opening stanza as they shot 10 of 19 from the charity stripe and connected on just one shot from the field.
Adding injury to insult was the horrific moment when Brad Coombs laid screaming on the floor with a dislocated toe. Despite the rough beginning however, Snake River showed their depth and talent as they cruised into next Tuesday nights conference championship game with a 63-42 victory.

Broncos comeback for road win at Preston

PRESTON — Make no mistake about it. Blackfoot was in trouble heading into the fourth quarter of their opening round conference tournament game at Preston on Tuesday night. That is until a small defensive shift to a pressure man-to-man look. That subtle adjustment on the defensive end sparked a fourth quarter comeback as the men in black advanced to the right side of the tournament bracket with a hard fought 48-45 victory.
"We just put our emphasis on more pressure in our man defense," Blackfoot head coach Dan Hale said. "We wanted to see how they would react to it and we were able to get into the passing lanes which disrupted what they were trying to do."

Russets open tournament with win over Teton

IDAHO FALLS — The Shelley Russets got a good view of just what can happen in district tournament play as they watched game one go double overtime before the top seeded Sugar-Salem Diggers finally prevailed over the fourth seeded South Fremont squad.
That eye opener served the Russets well as any thoughts of a Teton upset was quickly dispelled as the Russets rolled throughout the night to a convincing 64-34 victory.

Cougars kennel Huskies 72-52

FIRTH — Behind a 30 point night from senior guard Mitch Orme the Firth Cougars picked up a regular season split with Nuclear Conference rival North Fremont with a 72-52 victory on Friday evening.
Following a pre game ceremony honoring the five seniors on the squad, Braden Boyer, Luis Avila, Kent Jolley, Quinn Alvey and the aforementioned Mitch Orme exploded out of the gates as they outscored the visiting Huskies 31-11 in the first quarter.

Broncos skin Diamonbacks 77-10

BLACKFOOT — A long week of wrestling continued on Thursday evening as the Blackfoot Broncos welcomed the Century Diamondbacks to town on senior night for a High Country Conference duel on the mats.
In the end, Thursday nights match was more of a breather, considering their previous nights work at Minico for a duel with Minico and Columbia, as they crushed the Diamondbacks 77-10.

BLACKFOOT — All in all it was a highly successful senior night at Blackfoot High School as the Bronco faithful paid tribute to senior band, cheerleader, broncadette and basketball players as they took to the Chris Gardner Gymnasium for the final regular season time on Wednesday evening.
In the end, the basketball team sent those seniors out in style as they completed the regular season sweep of the Century Diamondbacks by winning a 47-36 defensive affair.
"It took us two and a half quarters to finally blow it open but when we did we took control of the game," Blackfoot head coach Dan Hale said. "It was an extremely good effort and I'm just really proud of the kids. It was a great way to end senior night."

3A Southeast Idaho Conference Champions!

POCATELLO — The Snake River Lady Panthers got off to a quick start in their 3A fifth district championship game against long time nemesis Marsh Valley as they led from start to finish for a 52-43 victory over the Lady Eagles.
"I knew that one of us would shoot the ball well tonight and it happened to be us," Snake River head coach Rich Dunn said. "Tonight was just one of those nights that we were ready. We weren't too pumped up and during our shoot around at four I told Mike [Kirkham] that we were ready. I could just feel it."
