Nine Bingham County wrestlers reach finals at state wrestling tournament in Nampa

March 1, 2014

NAMPA — All season long Blackfoot's Bryant Sargent has been focused on the goal of winning a state championship.
After the first day of the state wrestling tournament Sargent's goal is one match away.
The Balckfoot senior made it through the first day of the tournament unscathed and will take on Bonneville's Jared Bird today for the 170 pound 4A title at the Idaho Center in Nampa.
Sargent took down Nampa's Afton Silva in the first round 6-4, he then earned a win over Bishop Kelly's Mark Greene in round two to move on to the semifinals.
In the semifinals Sargent defeated Kuna's Braydon Shell by a score of 9-5 to take on Bird. Sargent and Bird have met a couple of times this season and have split each meeting.
Sargent is the only Bronco still alive to win a state title as Chase Wasia and Lane Hunt were defeated in the semifinals at 138 and 120 pounds respectively. Both will begin action today in the hunt for a top five finish.

February 27, 2014

BLACKFOOT — Not even a week has passed since the Firth Lady Cougars raised the 2A state championship trophy at the Idaho Center in Nampa, but it is time for me to name the All-Bingham County girls basketball team.
The basketball season was full of exciting moments for the teams in Bingham County and saw improvement by some teams, a step backward by others and a lot of hope for the future.

Panthers win district championship over Bear Lake 57-37

February 26, 2014

POCATELLO — In the opening quarter last Friday night against American Falls, Snake River did not come out and play it's best quarter against the winless Beavers.
Tuesday night the Panthers took on Bear Lake with the 3A District 5 championship on the line and this time they were determined to show that last week's game was a fluke.
Kade Keller did his best to make sure the Panthers made a statement early and take the feisty Bears out of the game.
Keller slashes and knifed his way to the basket to a tune of a game-high 27 points, seven in the first quarter as the Panthers dominated the Bears from start to finish earning a 57-37 victory, the district title and the chance to defend their 3A state championship.

Shelley downs Sugar-Salem in district semifinals

February 25, 2014

MARANA, Ariz. (AP) — Along with celebrating a World Golf Championship that took him to No. 4 in the world, Jason Day couldn't help but consider the rest of the young season and wonder just how much higher he could go.
That's when he paused to reflect, and to make a confession.
One of the worst labels hung on any golfer is that he's only playing for a check. Day said he used to be one of those guys.

Firth defeats district rival Ririe for 2A state title

February 22, 2014

NAMPA — Take away Firth's 25 free throws, and Ririe would have walked away victorious. Shooting from the stripe was the difference between leaving state champion or settling for runner-up, and Firth delivered when it mattered.

The Cougars hit 64 percent of their attempts to secure their Class 2A state championship in Saturday's 45-36 victory over the Bulldogs at the Idaho Center. Firth recognized the importance of free throw shooting after narrowly escaping the opening round of tournament play with a victory.

Firth girls dominate Melba to reach 2A title game

February 22, 2014

KUNA — The Firth and Ririe girls basketball programs are all too familiar with each other, playing each other four times this season with a 2-2 result. Today at the Idaho Center in Nampa, the tiebreaker doesn't get any bigger: the Cougars and Bulldogs meet for the Class 2A state championship.

Both Firth and Ririe won in Friday's championship semifinal games, with the Cougars dominating another group of Bulldogs, the ones from Melba, in a 57-35 rout that seemed to be decided halfway through the first quarter.
