Panthers hold on for road win over Cougars

December 31, 2010

ST. ANTHONY — The Snake River Panthers shook off a sluggish third quarter and mounting foul trouble, coming from behind for a big 50-47 road win over South Fremont on Thursday evening.
"We were able to hit some big free throws at the end when we needed them," Snake River coach Kendall Keller said. "You know, anytime you can get a win on the road it's a big win."
Playing in the middle of the holiday break can always be an adventure but Snake River came out strong, taking a 23-16 lead into the locker room at the half.

December 30, 2010

FIRTH — It is a rarity when a wrestling tournament comes down to the final match of the day but that is exactly how the Firth Invitational Tournament came to an end as the final team tally wasn't decided until the final match was over.
For the Firth Cougars, that match was huge as Ben Cornia came through with a first period pin of his Challis opponent to give the Cougars a 2 point win in the team standings 169 to 167 for Challis.

Firth steamrolls South Fremont

December 24, 2010

FIRTH — It was billed as a cat fight at Firth High School as the Firth Cougars welcomed the South Fremont Cougars for a non-conference tilt on the hardwood.
In the end that cat fight was a lopsided affair as Firth steamrolled the 3A Cougars 58-27.
"We did a good job," Firth head coach Scott Adams said. "A lot of things that we were able to work on in game situations."
A night after a hard fought loss to Sugar-Salem, Firth came back on a mission, opening the night with a 11-0 run over the first four minutes of play.

Panthers complete season sweep of Broncos

December 23, 2010

THOMAS — Snake River vs Blackfoot. A highly charged situation regardless of circumstances. On Wednesday night, the emotions were ratcheted up just a bit as Blackfoot took to the hardwood with their coach in the stands but not on the bench due to a controversial decision by the Blackfoot superintendent.
The Blackfoot players honored their embattled coach by wearing his name on the back of their warm ups as well as his initials on their arms.

Firth improves, but falls to Soda-Springs

December 22, 2010

FIRTH — Normally, when a team out-rebounds and out-shoots their opponent from the free throw line, that team will find themselves in the win column.
Not so on Tuesday night as the visiting Lady Cardinals of Soda-Springs were able to overcome those two categories in the stat column in a 57-42 win over Firth.
"Soda-Springs is one of the elite teams in our division, they really are," Firth head coach Sharla Cook said. "They have an excellent team and they did a good job tonight of hitting clutch shots."

Broncos earn much needed win

December 18, 2010

BLACKFOOT — Blackfoot head coach Jonathan Packer is fond of saying that win or lose the goal is to get better the next day.
On Friday evening, the Blackfoot Broncos showed that they are indeed better than they were just two nights previous, as they held off a furious Rigby fourth quarter rally, and then pulled away from the Trojans for a 65-53 conference victory.
"We're learning how to win, this game was about learning how to finish and get a win," coach Packer said.

As the collective crowd held their breath, the ball banked off the glass, banging in and out of the basket only to fall away as the Shelley Lady Russets prevailed 52-49.
