Areas best football players shine on gridirion one final time

May 24, 2014

Shelley’s Taylor Lund and a District 6 teammate drag down Century’s Remy Lambson during the Idaho National Guard East Idaho All-Star Game at Shelley High School Friday night.

SHELLEY — For a large majority of the players on the field of Shelley High School Friday night the 2nd Annual Idaho National Guard East Idaho All-Star Game was the last time they would ever strap on pads and a helmet.
With one last chance to make a big catch or a big hit in front of family and friends the squads made up of some of the top players from District 5 and District 6 did not disappoint the large crowd on a perfect Friday night for football.
After trailing for most of the game the squad from District 6 turned to one of the top small school quarterbacks in Eastern Idaho in Salmon's Jedd Tibbitts.
Tibbitts capped of a long drive with a six-yard touchdown pass to Rigby's Landon Larsen and then caught a ensuing two-point conversion on an end around from Idaho Falls' Deric Dedee to help lead District 6 to a come from behind 27-21 win Friday night.
The District 6 squad had to battle back from a one point halftime deficit and a eight point deficit mid-way through the third quarter to earn the win.
That win was earned thanks in part to a very aggressive defense.
Led by the Russets Trevor Smith and Rigby's Kayden Killpack the District 6 squad put pressure on the District 5 quarterback duo of Century's Shane Rominger and Highland's Tommy Jewell.
The defense forced a pair of fumbles and intercepted two passes to go along with a pair of fourth down stands to take the high octane District 5 offense out of the flow they had been in all game long.
Skyline's Zak Bennett threw a pair of touchdown passes to pace the District 6 offense. Larsen holed in three touchdown passes.
The boys from Bingham County made some big plays on the night.
Shelley's Taylor Lund had a couple of key pass break-ups covering the group of receivers from Highland and Century.
Russets teammate Trevor Smith had a huge sack and forced fumble of Jewell in the waining seconds of the first half to prevent the driving District 5 offense from being able to get some points before the half.
Blackfoot's Camden Chidester racked up 32 yards rushing on two carries after playing this past season as a linebacker for the Broncos.
None of the athletes from Bingham County found the end zone Friday night, but judging by the smiles and conversations on the sidelines each and every player had a good night.
Bennett led District 6 going 5-for-8 for 101 yards and two touchdowns passing. Each of the three District 6 quarterbacks had at least one touchdown pass.
Idaho Falls' Clayton Powell hauled in three passes for 81 yards.
