BHS culinary students stirring up good things in the community

The students cooked up a "sitdown" Mexican feast for students and staff who wanted a break from the cafeteria or fast food lunch fare.

Blackfoot High School culinary art students are slicing, dicing, grating, stirring, pinching, pouring and tasting...all to serve up homemade cuisine for the classroom and the community.
The Culinary Arts Department, which is under the umbrella of the school's Family and Consumer Science program, has been available to students for the past four years; however, most people in the community are not aware of what the class really brings to the table.
"We are cooking up some wonderful food and sharing our culinary talents with the community" said instructor Tammy Luker.
The class, consisting of about 24 students, prepares sitdown gourmet lunches monthly at the high school. Tickets are sold for $5 to students and staff who want to come into the classroom, which is laid out restaurant style, and enjoy a nice lunch prepared from scratch and served to them.
The menus vary. In February, the students prepared a traditional Mexican feast of freshly made salsa, posole' (Mexican soup), carne asada, tortillas, rice and beans, and bunuelos a crispy, cinnamon Mexican dessert.
