SHELLEY — On a near picture perfect day the Shelley Lady Russets welcome the Snake River Lady Panthers to town for an afternoon of softball. For the Lady Russets, it was their first outing of the year while the Lady Panthers entered the game with a 3-3 record thus far on the young season.
By days end, it was the Lady Panthers who emerged victorious as they pounded out 16 hits in a 14-7 win.
"It was a good day. It was beautiful weather and the girls came out and hit the ball," Snake River head coach Kay Martin said. "We never were really in control of the game though until that big inning."
Indeed the game was a tug of war over the first five innings of play with Snake River taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning and the Lady Russet regaining the lead at 4-2 with a three run home half of the fourth inning.

Snake River tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth when they took advantage of three base on balls when Chelsey Martin drove in a run with a free pass and was followed with an Ashlyn Wood sacrifice fly that scored Sara Goodwin for the tying run.
Shelley bounced back however with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to regain the lead at 6-4. Madi Ball got the inning started with a solid single. She then stole second base and advanced to third on a single by Erica Daniels. One batter later Abbey Higham drove in Ball with abase knock and Daniels came scampering home on a hit by Allyson Hadley.
"I'm absolutely happy with today," First year Shelley head coach Brenda Whitworth said. "We have been outside a total of one day before todays game and to walk out here from the gym to the field, I was pleased with how the girls did. They really don't know how good they are but I can see it. They have great attitudes and I am happy to have them."
"Kudos to Shelley," coach Martin echoed. "They battled. They really did. They stayed right in it up till the big inning."
That big inning was the sixth. Trailing by a pair of runs Snake River erupted in the sixth inning as they sent 13 hitters to the plate in a 7 run uprising. Ashlyn Wood and Katie Ogden each had huge hits in the inning as Wood drove in a pair with a double and Ogden followed her lead with a triple which turned into a round tripper with a throwing error by the Lady Russets.
Snake River added three more runs in the top of the seventh when Raegan Martin rounded the bases with a RBI single and a three base error for the final tally.
Shelley (0-1) will look to rebound from the opening game loss when they travel to Firth for a date with the Lady Cougars today at 4 p.m.
Snake River (4-3) will be back in action on Thursday when they host Teton for a 4:30 contest.
