Blackfoot blanks Shelley 6-0
Blackfoot's Mattison Chavez slides into home while Shelley catcher, Shateel Murphy takes the throw during Thursday's county clash at Blackfoot High School.
BLACKFOOT — Bingham County foes collided on the softball diamond at Blackfoot High School on Thursday afternoon and when the dust had settled it was the Lady Broncos who stood triumphant with a 6-0 win over the Lady Russets of Shelley.
The win spoiled the return of Shelley head coach Brenda Whitworth who took to the visiting dugout on a field in which she had led the Lady Broncos to so many wins on in her tenure as the head coach of the Lady Broncos.
"It was just another game. I respect Matt and I respect his program and it was fun to see some of the girls that I used to coach but it really was just another game," coach Whitworth said.
"We had two girls, Matti and Jess who played for Brenda and it was kind of exciting to play against her," Blackfoot head coach Matt Chavez said. "They said that she had pretty much the same signs so they kind of knew what was coming."
Morningrose Tobey toed the rubber for the Lady Broncos and the sophomore was sensational for coach Chavez as she worked 7 scoreless innings, allowing just 2 hits while striking out 7 in the victory.
"She is by far the best pitcher that we've seen this year and probably will see all year long but my girls weren't scared. They went up there and hit the ball which I am proud of," Shelley head coach Brenda Whitworth said. "That's been the thing. Getting confidence and believing in themselves."
Blackfoot took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning as Jessica Capson and Morningrose Tobey each hit one out singles with Capson scoring on a sacrifice fly off of the bat of Ashlynn Beers.
Blackfoot scored four more runs in the bottom of the third inning as Mattison Chavez roped a one out triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Capson. The Lady Broncos then went on a two out rally with Tobey picking up her second single of the day and after a stolen base, Tobey came racing around to score on an RBI single by Beers. Madison Leslie put a big exclamation point on the inning with a line drive, two run homer over the left field fence on the next pitch and Blackfoot led 5-0.
"It was hard to stay back on their pitcher because it was a little slower than what we are used to. I thought they did a much better job adjusting to that than I thought that they would though and I have to give them credit for adjusting so quickly," coach Chavez said. "Madison Leslie just crushed the ball. The girl is strong and I just told her to keep her weight back and get her hands through."
Shelley (5-2) will look to shake off the loss with a road date at Snake River today at 4:30 while Blackfoot (10-1, 4-0) will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Rigby for a conference double header beginning at 4 p.m.
