Blackfoot boys capture first ever district tennis championship
POCATELLO — Fantastic! That was the word that repeatedly came from Blackfoot head tennis coach Brint Jeffris on Thursday afternoon as his boys team captured their first district championship in the history of the program by a wide margin as they scored 71.5 team points with Century coming in second with a team total score of 48.
"This is the first district championship for the boys and with eleven players going to state that is the most ever," Blackfoot head coach Brint Jeffris said. "This was probably the most successful team in the history of Blackfoot tennis."
Tanner "Smoke" Norton and Jacob "Fire" Harris anchored the boys squad as the juniors combined for a boys doubles championship, a title that validated their strong play all season long.
In the boys singles, the Broncos got a pair of state qualifiers with Daylan Bird picking up a second place finish and Valer Stiavnicky coming home with a fourth place finish.
Not to be out done was the girls squad who finished third as a team with 51 team points. Bonneville was first with a team total of 66.
Blackfoot also took home a district championship in mixed doubles as the top seeded team of Tyler Cannon and Meg Matsuura took home the top spot on the podium. Fellow mixed doubles teammates, Ben Hong and Brandi Bird also qualified for state with a fourth place finish.
In girls doubles Baylee Gorder and Kendall Armstrong continued to impress with their second place finish and rounding out the state qualifiers was freshman girls singles player Jocelyn Truman who finished third in her first district tournament.
"It's been a great district tournament and a great year," coach Jeffris said. "We will head off to state and I'm sure that we will make some noise there."
Blackfoot will leave for the state tournament on Thursday and will begin play at 8 a.m. at the Boise Racket and Swim Club.
"I really feel that our mixed and boys doubles teams have a great shot at winning state titles," coach Jeffris said. "If that holds and we get some key wins for some points by our singles players Dalan Bird and Valer Stiavnicky it's feasible to get a team state title."
