BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Bronco wrestling team made their home debut on Wednesday evening as they hosted Preston for a conference battle on the mats. Wrestling short handed with a handful of wrestlers out with injuries the Broncos showcased their overall depth as they took home the team win with a 51-31 final.
"It's been awhile since we have been home so it was good to get it rolling in front of our home crowd with all of the alumni, family and friends watching," Blackfoot head coach Thain Cashmore said. "We had a lot of young kids go out for us today and they stepped it up. Even though some of their matches might not of ended the way that they wanted it to, I thought that they showed a lot of heart and determination tonight. The core of our team did what they are supposed to do and they led us tonight."

Blackfoot opened the evening with six straight wins for a commanding 36-0 lead. Ruben Pulido began the run with a second period pin at 152. Connor Henderson put his opponent in a guillotine not once but twice with the second one leading to a second period pin at 160.
Bryant Sargent at 170, Shawn Walters at 182 and Austin Mathus at 195 each added pins ahead of a Fabian Dorantes win by forfeit for the large lead.
Preston responded however, wining the next six matches to close the gap to 36-31. They could get no closer however as Tate Hansen put the breaks on the comeback attempt with a second period pin at 132. Brian Goodwin followed with a hard fought 7-2 decision at 138 and Tucker Leavitt closed out the nights festivities with a commanding win, culminating with a pin at 145.
"Preston had a lot of momentum going there but Tate Hansen just quelled all of it with that pin," Coach Cashmore said. "Goodwin got a nice win and Tucker Leavitt put on an awesome show to end the night."
Blackfoot improves to 21-1 in duels and will attend the Madison Invitational Tournament held this Friday and Saturday.
"We will take what we had tonight and do the best job we can," Coach Cashmore said. "We will see most if not all of the High Country Conference at this tournament so it will be interesting to see how we match up and how we fare."
