Blackfoot sweeps Bonneville, captures regular season title

April 30, 2013

Taylor Beers puts the tag on a sliding Bonneville baserunner for an out during game two of Blackfoot's double header road sweep of the Bees.

IONA — The Blackfoot Lady Broncos wrapped up the regular season High Country Conference Championship with a double header sweep of Bonneville on Tuesday evening. Braving the cold, wind and snow, the Blackfoot bats were unfazed as they pounded out 29 hits during the double dip winning 14-2 in game one and then 13-2 in the nightcap.
"It seems like the more games that we play the stronger these girls are getting," Blackfoot head coach Matt Chavez said. "I feel like we are peaking at just the right time."

Peaking or not, Blackfoot displayed a potent lineup on Tuesday beginning early in the first game with four runs in each of the first two innings. Doubles and walks were the theme of the game with Madison Leslie and Ashlyn Beers each swatting a pair of the two baggers as the Bonneville pitching staff tried to work around the big bats of Mattison Chavez and Morningrose Tobey. That duo picked up 5 of the teams 8 base on balls in game one.
"The girls are just so solid all the way through the lineup," coach Chavez said. "Even when teams walk a girl in the line up the girls behind them are picking them up which is what you saw today."
Blackfoot tacked on 5 more runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 13-1 which was more than enough run support for starting pitcher Jessica Capson as she slammed the door on Bonneville for a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the fifth, halting the game with the ten run rule.
In the night cap the game was decidedly closer early on with Blackfoot taking a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the third as Madison Leslie drove home Jessica Capson. Bonneville gained their first lead of the night with a two run fourth inning for a 2-1 advantage but back roared the Lady Broncos as they answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth for the 3-2 lead.
Mattison Chavez launched a lead off double off the fence in left centerfield to ignite the rally as the Beers twins, Taylor and Ashlyn each drove in an RBI in the frame.
"I just can't say enough about the twins," coach Chavez said. "They are growing each and every day and they continue to get better and better. They are just coming along like no other."
Blackfoot extended that lead to 5-2 with two more runs in the top of the sixth inning when Capson reached on one of the 8 Bonneville fielding errors to lead off the inning. Chavez chased her home with an RBI triple and then scored herself when Morningrose Tobey helped her own cause with a sacrifice fly.
As the snow began to fly and the fans huddled together against the frigid wind, Blackfoot then iced the game away in the top of the seventh, sending 11 hitters to the plate while scoring 8 runs in the frame to make the final tally 13-2.
"The first game I was pretty comfortable because top to bottom of the lineup just jumped on them and built that early lead," coach Chavez said. "That slow start to the second game made me a little nervous but like champions they stuck with it, made the adjustments that they needed to make and got the job done."
Next up for Blackfoot (18-1, 8-0) is a road date at Rigby on Thursday for a remake of an earlier season snow out. First game will begin at 4 p.m.
