Blackfoot wrestling sends 14 to state

February 22, 2014

Blackfoot’s Chase Wasia holds onto Rigby’s Blake Anderson during the semifinal match of the 138 pound weight class at the 4A District 5/6 tournament Friday at Pocatello High School.

POCATELLO — After a long day of wrestling the Blackfoot Broncos will be sending 14 wrestlers to next week's state wrestling tournament in Nampa.

Marcus Menefe showed the most emotion of the day after a victory in the semifinals in which he got off the mat with a fist pump and then ran across the gym at Pocatello High School to hug is mom and the victory had guaranteed Menefe a berth in the state tournament.
"Marcus had a fantastic day wrestling," Blackfoot head coach Thain Cashmore said. "He really wrestled fantastic all day long."
Menefe finished as the runner-up at 106 pounds behind Kade Smith of Pocatello.
Cole Tarutner qualified at 98 pounds with a fourth place finish. Jared Evans came home third at 113 pounds and Lane Hunt was the runner-up at 120 pounds.
The lone district champion for the Broncos was Chase Wasia at 138 pounds. Wasia took down Chase Lemons of Bonneville in the finals.
Kelby Heiner and Benji Bigler each finished third at 126 and 132 pounds respectively. Darrel Harris finished fourth at 152 pounds.
Jared Sargent will head to state after a third place finish at 160 and his brother Bryant also qualified after finishing second at 170 pounds.
Ricardo Marcos took home fourth at 182, while Jacob Stewart and Logan Lamb finished second and third at 195 pounds. Zack Rodriguez closed out the Bronco qualifiers with a fourth place finish at 220 pounds.
"We wanted to qualify 16 kids so we came up a little short of that," Cashmore said. "But considering the quality of competition it was a good day for us."
The Broncos finished third in the team standings with 318 points. Pocatello was second with 336.5 and Bonneville was first with 501 points.
Blackfoot begins state tournament action Friday at the Idaho Center in Nampa.
