BLACKFOOT — Local MMA fighters thrilled the crowd at the Eastern Idaho State Fairgrounds on Saturday night as 14 fighters squared off for 7 thrilling bouts. Four of those matches were for title belts and the fighters didn’t fail to disappoint the raucous crowd in attendance. Leading off the night Arnie Wells and Hedwin Lopez. Lopez was climbing into the octagon for his first official fight and he held his own against the more experienced Wells, exchanging blows until the pair went to the mat. There, Wells showed his experience by working Lopez into a submission hold, one in which Lopez could not escape, eventually tapping out to give Wells the victory. In fight two, Blackfoot fighter Saul Luna took to the ring representing the local Primo’s Fight Club, taking on Shane Johnson. Luna came out firing, landing huge shots to Johnson’s head, causing several gashes on Johnson that bled profusely for the remainder of the fight.

AMERICAN FALLS — Momentum can be a fickle lover to be sure and on Saturday afternoon she spurned the Blackfoot Broncos, choosing the Bonneville Bee’s as her companion as the Blackfoot American Legion team closed out their fine season with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of long time nemesis Bonneville. “We had a hard time getting going, we just didn’t have that bounce that we had before,” Blackfoot skipper Jeff Katseanes said. Up until the seventh inning of Friday’s district championship game with Pocatello, Blackfoot looked for all the world as if they should be making their way to Burley for the state tournament this week. A hard loss in that game spilled over into Saturday’s contest as the Broncos simply couldn’t get the bats going again against the superb pitching outing by Bonneville starter Dylan Kowtz. Blackfoot was held in check for the entirety of the game, collecting just 2 hits, a single by Alex Jones and a bunt single by Jordan Lawes while striking out 15 times on the afternoon.
(Morning News - Mark High) Cody Evans is tagged out at the plate during an attempted squeeze play during the fifth inning of Blackfoot’s season ending loss to Bonneville on Saturday afternoon.
