BLACKFOOT — Sometimes during the long hot American Legion baseball season a team is going to take some lumps and have a performance that was less than stellar.
The Blackfoot Broncos experienced just that in Shelley on Monday when they were swept by their Bingham County rival Russets.
So when the Broncos took to the field on Wednesday for a doubleheader with the Idaho Falls Rangers the team was eager to prove that Monday's debacle in Shelley was a fluke.
The Broncos offense was eager to show the crowd baking in the 95 degree temperature at Blackfoot High School that they were here to play.
An eight run second inning was the spark the Broncos needed as they took game one 16-2 in five innings and game two 9-2 to earn the sweep and get back on the winning track.
After a leadoff walk to Taylor Pearson to start the second inning, Blackfoot recorded five consecutive hits with Brady Trappett's two-RBI double being the big hit.
But the Broncos offense was not done, making Idaho Falls starter Jake Smart work in the scorching heat.
Zach Later and Pearson drew bases loaded walks, Jaron Katseanes had a sacrifice fly and Trappett drew another bases loaded walk to finish off the inning.
In the second the Broncos sent 14 batters to the plate scoring eight runs on five hits.
Blackfoot was far from done scoring runs in the game. They tacked four runs on the scoreboard in each the third and fourth innings.
Pearson had a two-RBI double in the inning and Zack Later added an RBI single. In the third Cody Evans had a two-RBI double of his own and Brady Pearson capped off the scoring with a two-RBI double.
Every Bronco in the starting lineup recorded a hot in the game and seven of the nine players recorded at least one RBI.
Trappett and both Pearson's had three hits and three RBI in the game.
In game two Blackfoot looked to carry the momentum from game one at the plate and head coach Jeff Katseanes mixed up his lineup a bit trying to give the team a spark.
Taylor Pearson and Jeff Mathie each had first inning RBI singles, but then the offense went cold for a couple of innings.
The team left the bases loaded in the second and got no runs across. The third inning also ended with no results.
But in the bottom of the fourth a dropped third strike to leadoff hitter Cade Adakai sparked a four-run rally.
Adakai stole second and third before scoring on a wild pitch. Later picked up an RBI single, Russell Osborn scored on a wild pitch and Later stole home to cap off the scoring.
The Broncos added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to earn the 9-2 win.
Brady Pearson and Jaron Katseanes combined on a six-hitter where the Rangers got just two fourth inning runs.
Later finished the afternoon 5-for-7 with five RBI, Taylor Pearson added three hits and four RBI.
Blackfoot travels to Pocatello today for a doubleheader with the Pocatello Rebels.
First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Halliwell Park.
