Brent B. Hawkes, 72, a Salt Lake City resident formerly of Blackfoot, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at his home from natural causes.
He was born April 8, 1942, Blackfoot, Idaho, the son of Francis Sidney and Genevieve Pearl Goodwin Hawkes.
He grew up in Blackfoot where he graduated from Blackfoot High School. Brent started his education at BYU and then he continued his extensive education career in Philadelphia and graduated with his doctorate in Education from Penn State.
He taught elementary education in Phoenix, Ariz. and then continued as a professor in education in various colleges.
As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served a mission in his youth to Mexico.Â He taught the gospel doctrine class and had served on the high council while living in Oregon.Â Brent and his mother traveled to England to do genealogical research. He was serving a family history mission for the church at the time of his death.
He enjoyed doing the familyâ€™s genealogy and was accomplished as a seamster and made many of his own clothes.Â He also enjoyed tatting and different members of the family have some of his work.
Survivors include four siblings, Afton Shawver, Pingree, Idaho;Â Vernial (Doris) Hawkes, Kimberly, Idaho; Jay (Joyce) Hawkes, Riverside, Idaho; and Orva Nelson Salt Lake City, Utah, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Rowland and Mertin Hawkes, and two sisters, Ruth Scott and Virginia Charlesworth.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2014, at the Riverside-Thomas Cemetery under the direction of the Hawker Funeral Home.
