Bronco grapplers finish second at Bonneville Duels

December 16, 2012

Chase Wasia puts the squeeze on his Teton foe during Saturday action at Bonneville.

IONA — The Blackfoot Bronco wrestling team capped a very busy eight day stretch of wrestling with a perfect 9-0 record at the Bonneville Duels over the weekend, good enough for second place in the massive tournament just five points behind the Bees of Bonneville.
"The team showed a lot of heart," Blackfoot head coach Thain Cashmore said. "I was impressed with how the team stepped up. It was a good ending to a hard week of wrestling."

Indeed, the Broncos have accumulated an 18-1 record over the first eight days of the wrestling season and over the weekend, Blackfoot had five wrestlers finish the tournament with unblemished records.
Chase Wasia (120), Conner Henderson (160), Bryant Sargent (170) and Austin Mathus (195) all finished with perfect records in the meet. Wasia had six pins and a major decision to his credit during the tournament. Also unblemished was Tate Hansen who was 6-0 as he yielded his spot in the lineup for three of the matches to junior varsity grappler Chase James who went 2-1 in Hansen's stead.
“I used a Bronco Ride with wrist and hand control going into pinning combinations,” Wasia said. “Two of my pins were with stacks.  Our team is solid this year and our motto is ‘No one takes us down and no one holds us down’.”
Blackfoot also had a trio of wrestlers finish with 8-1 records as Tucker Leavitt, Ruben Pulido and Hyatt Henderson each had a solid effort over the weekend.
Blackfoot was 4-0 on Friday with wins over Sugar-Salem (60-16), Snake River (57-17), Shelley (78-10) and Preston (78-9).
On Saturday Blackfoot swept through their competition by beating Challis (54-15), Emmett (81-6), American Falls (59-24), Teton (68-12) and Mountain Home (69-18).
Next up for Blackfoot (18-1) will be a duel at Pocatello after the holiday break on Jan 4.
