Broncos, Bobcats play to 1-1 draw

September 3, 2014

Blackfoot’s Mariah Quezada dribbles the ball past a Madison defender Wednesday afternoon

BLACKFOOT — On a day as windy as Wednesday was trying to play anything in the air would prove to be a challenge.
During pre game warmups the Blackfoot and Madison girls soccer teams spent a majority of their warmups figuring out how to play the ball downfield without it getting caught up in the 25-35 mph winds.
After winning the coin flip the Broncos had the chance to play with the wind at their backs in the first half and the Broncos took advantage by sending as many balls towards the Bobcats net as possible.
The Broncos Sierra Sanchez and Maria Velasquez each had really good scoring chances in the opening 40 minutes, but both missed their intended target.
Sanchez's shot sailed high over the crossbar, while Velasquez's shot was stopped by Bobcat goalie Charlie Jensen.
Just before halftime Sanchez got another chance to put the Lady Broncos on the board.
After getting a run down the right side of the field Sanchez let a shot go towards the net from the top of the goal box.
The ball bounced off the hands of Jensen and appeared to be stopped, but there was such force behind the shot the ball rolled into the net just barely getting across the goal line for the goal.
A few minutes later the half ended with Broncos leading 1-0.
During halftime both teams made adjustments and did their best to get more balls into the net. But unlike the first half the Broncos spent much of the second 40 minutes play defense as the Bobcats increased the offensive pressure.
Madison had plenty of opportunities to get the equalizing goal in the first 20 minutes of the second half but instead of finding the inside of the net the Bobcats had five different shots find the side of the net and the roll out of bounds.
In the 70ht minute the Bobcats got the equalizer they had been working all half to get.
Kaylee Anderson found herself in a mass of bodies in front of the Broncos goal when a crossing pass came into the goal mouth. Anderson and a teammate both went for the ball while three Broncos defenders tried to stop a shot, but Anderson's shot snuck past Broncos goalie Anicia Luna and into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
The Broncos had one chance real good chance to to get the game winner when Madison Rigby took a long pass but, Jensen came out and poked the ball away.
With less than 30 seconds remaining in the game Madison's Rachel Orchard sent a shot towards the net that got caught up in the wind and hit the crossbar, narrowly missing the net.
A few seconds later the final whistle blew ending the game in a 1-1 draw.
Blackfoot (1-1-2) opens 4A District 5/6 play on Sept.11 when they host Pocatello.
