BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot American Legion baseball squad closed out their regular season on Friday afternoon as they welcomed the Eastern Division leading Madison Cat's to town for a non conference tilt on the diamond.
At the end of the day, Blackfoot finished with a split as they picked up a 5-3 win in game one and then came up just short in their comeback efforts in game two as they fell 9-7.
"We really wanted to come out and get game one because we were matched up with Madison with their best against our best," Blackfoot head coach Jeff Katseanes said. "It was really good to come out and get a good look as to how we match up with them and to be honest, I wouldn't want to play our team right now because we are playing some pretty good baseball."
The Broncos jumped on the Cats in the home half of the first inning when Jaron Katseanes roped a bases clearing double leading to a 4-1 Blackfoot advantage.
Dylan Mansanarez and Russell Osborn combined to hold Madison to just two more runs over the remainder of the contest as the Broncos took the opening game.
In the night cap Blackfoot once again took the early lead with a pair of first inning runs. Madison answered back with a six pack in the top of the second inning however, putting the Broncos in comeback mode for the remainder of the contest. That comeback almost came to fruition as the Broncos plated a trio of base runners in the bottom of the seventh inning but unfortunately, that was as close ad the broncos could get as they fell 9-7.
"In game two we came out working on a few things and had some kids out of position a little," Coach Katseanes said. "We did a lot of shuffling of the line up but we still had a shot to win it in the end so I was proud of the kids for that."
Blackfoot (30-10) will look ahead to the district tournament which will begin next Thursday in Idaho Falls.
"We could be anywhere from a three seed to a five seed depending on how come games turn out this weekend," Coach Katseanes said. "Going into the tournament everyone has an ace and it will depend upon how everyone's three and four pitchers perform and I honestly think that our pitching staff are deeper than everyone else's so we are looking forward to the tournament."
