IDAHO FALLS — With the season in the balance the Blackfoot Broncos entered their loser out contest with Madison tied at 2-2 to begin the seventh inning. Colby Pearson was able to move himself into scoring position and senior Shawn Whitehead came through with an RBI single which allowed Pearson to run into home, putting the Broncos ahead.
With the Blackfoot’s strong defense working together, they were able to hold the Bobcats in the bottom of the seventh as they took the 3-2 win.
“They played really good today. It wasn’t the prettiest game but we battled against them,” Blackfoot head coach Kenny Dahle said. “We just had to sit back and be patient, and then we had a key hit at the right time.”
Cody Evans was the first to score a run for the Broncos after Cole Mansanerez connected with a single, in the top of the third. Whitehead also made it into home, giving Dylan Mansanerez an RBI in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2.
The Broncos worked well together defensively. Russell Osborn pitched seven innings and only allowed two runs while scattering nine hits.
“Russell came out and threw great for us. We just told him in the last inning to throw strikes and let the defense back him up,” Coach Dahle said.
The Broncos are still hopeful to make it to the State Tournament and will do just that if they can pick up a win today when they face off against Hillcrest. First pitch is scheduled for 4 P.M. at Melaleuca Field.
“I cant say it enough how proud of them I am. It is nice to see when kids are coachable and they are," Coach Dahle said. "They could of rolled over and died after the game was tied but they kept battling back.”
