BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Bronco boys soccer squad turned in another stellar defensive performance on Thursday afternoon as they stifled the visiting Hillcrest Knights with a solid 1-0 non-conference victory.
"You know that Hillcrest is a good team and even though it's no longer conference you can feel it from the kids that this game is a big game because of it," Blackfoot head coach Liam Pope said. "Hillcrest is a big challenge and so this game had some bite to it."
Hillcrest certainly came out fired up to play the defending 4A state champions as they came out as the aggressor in the first ten minutes of play. Despite those efforts however, the Blackfoot defense simply shut down the Knights once they got within striking range as goal keeper Oziel Oseguera was able to keep a clean sheet largely in part to no serious shot attempts on goal.
"Hillcrest dominated the first ten minutes and it was because both of our midfields were hunting the ball," Coach Pope said. "Jesus [Pelayo] and Carlos brought it to my attention and we made an adjustment to keep on midfielder back while the other continued to hunt the ball."
Despite the early onslaught Blackfoot still were able to mount several attacks on the Hillcrest goal and in the eighth minute of play it was the Garcia brothers who cashed in as younger brother Jordan hit older brother Andy on a perfect little give and go for the games only score.
From there, Blackfoot peppered the Hillcrest defense outshooting the Knights by a wide margin but the ball was unable to find the back of the net.
"I'm not concerned with the lack of goals because at least tonight we were pulling the trigger on our shots rather than trying to walk the ball into the the goal," Coach Pope said. "Honestly, I feel sorry for the team that we finally break out against because the law of averages say that with all the opportunities that we are getting we should be scoring a lot more goals and those will come."
Blackfoot (2-0-1) will be looking for that break out game next Tuesday when they travel to Madison for a non-conference tilt beginning at 4:30 P.M.
