IDAHO FALLS — The Blackfoot Bronco's weathered a physical start with the Skyline Grizzlies on Friday afternoon and the got a hat trick from Carlos Flores who scored three second half goals as the Broncos began their 2011 season with a 3-0 victory.
"Skyline is a good, good team and they caught us by surprise a bit to begin the game," Blackfoot head coach Liam Pope said. "I don't think that we were ready for the speed and the game was a bit more physical than what we were expecting. I'm not complaining about physical play, not one bit because I was proud of the way that my team responded to that style of play."
Indeed, the home standing Grizzlies took the play to the Broncos for the better part of the first half. Solid defense by the back line of the Broncos defense, coupled with some marvelous play by double O agent Ozzy Oseguera thwarted any advantage that the Grizzlies thought that they had, leading to a 0-0 tie at the half.
"We could have been down 2 or 3 goals very easily," Coach Pope said. "One thing that we did do well though was defend and Ozzy is just fearless in goal for us. He did a great job of picking when to be aggressive and come of the line to take away scoring chances that they had. He was huge."
Six minutes into the second half Flores put the Broncos on top for good as he knocked in a rebound for the games first score. Everardo Bartolo had placed a good shot on the Skyline keeper which bounced free and Flores didn't miss the opportunity as he planted the ball squarely into the corner of the net.
The score remained 1-0 for most of the remainder of the second half with the Grizzlies putting on a late push in an attempt to tie the game. In the 77th minute Flores put the game out of reach as he took a high lobbing pass from Gerardo Bartolo behind the Grizzly keeper.
One minute later, Flores earned the hat trick with his third goal of the game, this one courtesy of a nice assist by Sigve Borgmo.
"It's nice to begin the season with a win," Coach Pope said. "It does wonders for our team confidence, especially picking up a win against a quality opponent such as Skyline."
Blackfoot (1-0) will next be in action on Thursday when they host Rigby in the conference opener. Game time will be 4:30 P.M.
