Broncos pound out 29 hits in doubl header sweep
Cody Evans makes the play at the plate during second game action at Hillcrest on Tuesday evening.
AMMON — The Blackfoot Bronco American Legion baseball squad entered Tuesday's double header against the Eastern Division leading Idaho Falls Royals a little short handed as a pair of their big bats were missing.
You never would have noticed the absence however as the Broncos pounded away at the Royal pitching staff for 10 runs on 29 hits over the double header as the Broncos swept the Royals 10-4 and 10-9.
"It was good to pick up a pair of wins today," Blackfoot head coach Jeff Katseanes said.
Blackfoot opened the day's festivities with a big 6 run third inning in game one as the Broncos trotted 12 batters to the plate and then, the Broncos backed that inning up with a four run fourth inning to take a commanding 10-1 lead.
Tyler Lindsay was the big bat in the Bronco line up in the opening game as the young catcher was 4 for 4 with a double in the convincing win.
"That ball must look like a watermelon coming in there right now for Tyler because he's seeing it really well right now," Coach Katseanes said.
A trio of pitchers worked the game for the win with Cody Evans working the first five innings before handing the ball over to Taylor Pearson and Jaron Katseanes for the final two frames.
"Everyone came out and were having fun today," Assistant coach Alex Jones said. "We just came out and played laid back baseball and we were able to do all of the little things that it takes to win a ball game like getting our bunts down and some hit and run."
The momentum garnered in game one spilled over into the night cap as the Broncos tallied a run in the first, three runs in the second and then five runs in the third inning.
Shad Lewis and Taylor Pearson each hit extra base knocks over that time frame with Lewis reaching with a stand up triple and Pearson legging out a double.
"I liked what I saw at the plate on how the guys were making the adjustments that we were asking them to make," Assistant coach Matt Harris said. "Everyone were doing their jobs and not trying to do to much up there which was a key today."
Zach Later carried a big stick for the Broncos as well, finishing game two 4 for 4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored.
In addition to the offensive outburst, Later also took over in relief on the hill in the third inning and the feisty right hander was up to the challenge as he closed out the final five innings, scattering six hits over those five innings for the victory.
"Zach has that straight bulldog mentality," Coach Jones said. "He came out and pounded the strike zone."
"We weren't even planning on pitching Zach today," Coach Katseanes said. "He threw great today though and we needed him."
With the wins, Blackfoot improves their season record to 19-7 and they will return to action on Friday when they travel to Pocatello for a key conference match up with the Razorbacks. The teams will square off for a double header under the lights with the first game beginning at 6 P.M.
