Broncos remain unbeaten with 2-0 win over Russets

September 2, 2011

Alberto Tafoya blasts a shot past the Shelley defense for a goal in the first minute of the second half at Shelley High School on Thursday.

SHELLEY — There were plenty of scoring opportunities during the Blackfoot and Shelley boys soccer game on Thursday afternoon. In the end, Blackfoot converted a pair of those chances to remain unbeaten on the season with a 2-0 win on the Russets home field.
"Some time you get three chances and you score on all three and other times you get fifteen chances and you score one, it's just how the game goes," Blackfoot head coach Liam Pope said.
"I just wanted to get the ball into the net so bad," Shelley head coach Brian Park said. "We had three great chances early in the first half but that goalie is amazing."
Indeed, the double O agent, Ozzy Oseguera was his normal dominating self as he set the tone as he turned aside a trio of shots on goal in the eighth minute of play, the last a diving save that stole a goal from Mathew Scarr who had an open net to shoot at.
"Ozzy was brilliant again today," Coach Pope said. "I don't think that there is a better goalie in all of Southeastern Idaho."
Offensively the Broncos placed a lot of pressure on the Russet defense but were only able to solve the riddle on two occasions, a Jesus Pelayo goal in the fourteenth minute and an Alberto Tafoya goal in the forty first minute of play.
"It was a lot better game today, I was pretty pleased with the effort," Coach Pope said. "Shelley are a lot better. That team is massively improved from last year."
"Blackfoot have a talented team and we tried to take it to them and I think that we did a good job of that," Coach Park said.
With the win, Blackfoot improves their record to 5-0 and more importantly 3-0 in conference play. Shelley is still looking for there first win of the season and will travel to Madison on Thursday. The Broncos will travel to Hillcrest on Tuesday.
